Then like myself stick to harder films. I see no need in supporting companies that make inferior products when there are several high quality manufacturers with readily available products. It is not like I need 220 film.

All I can add is that I've been using recent GP3 100 in 127 format and haven't experienced any of these issues using a more standard dev/fix/wash/dry method. While I still don't quite see how the monobath could do this...I think we need to exclude it by trying more standard methods. Thank you for "taking one for the team".

Passing along my thanks to @Huss as well, the photo above came out great.

I was surprised to see the GP3 in 127, in which I'd be able to use my Kodak Baby Brownie Special again, but no one in the U.S. sells their 127, I've only seen it in 120 (B&H).
 
Thank you everyone who's tested the 220 film. @Huss those latest photos look great. I'm really looking forward to trying this out when a suitable opportunity presents itself. Not sure that lugging my Kiev 6 to Lanzarote is a good idea, though I did once take it across the pond to Boston. I really want to try this now!

Good to know it does well in regular chemistry. Perhaps the people at Shanghai can add a note to their website about the monobath issue?

You can probably order direct from the Shanghai people.....they also do 620...all these formats are of interest to me, though in small quantities.

I've never ordered anything directly outside of the U.S. and would prefer to order it from within. Concerns would be the amount of time it would take to arrive, the conditions once it's shipped (climate/temperature) and import taxes/duties.

I would hope that if there is enough interest in 127 and 620, B&H and possibly Freestyle, might decide to offer them.

Fair enough.

I have done some retail business direct in the past. Mostly with electronics, where I could get PCBs overseas in far smaller quantities than domestic. Duties tend to be no problem for small quantity purchases from China to the US, as is shipping cost because of how the Chinese postal system subsidizes things. Time, however, is sometimes substantial, especially this last year.

Note that, if you order locally, that retailer's order probably came over in a shipping container along with everything else, so ordering direct is unlikely to be any better or worse, weatherwise, if you trust the source.

Again, all that said, it really would be nice if local regional retailers stocked it. Much better to be able to buy 5 rolls to play with your Brownie than have to hassle with international shipping direct.
 
I buy a LOT on eBay from overseas sellers. Many of the Chinese sellers use some bulk shipper that moves the package close to destination, then hands them over to the post office for the last mile. They're generally pretty reliable, but SLOW. Frequently a month or a month and a half for delivery. I don't know how Shanghai ships directly, but slow shipping would be my biggest concern, not as much handling and xray since its likely going through the same scans that B&H containers go through at customs. I have a lens board adapter that I ordered a month and a half ago. That may be the first one that will be lost (stuff ordered later and shipped with the same shipper have passed it and been delivered already.) But that also why I prefer to order stuff like that through eBay, so I get the eBay protection, in addition to PayPal protection. For US buyers, import duties are a non issue unless you are buying over $800 worth of film (and even then, customs rarely steps in, even when I bought a $1500 Bronica GS-1 kit from Japan.) But...

There has been some discussion in the past that CatLabs 80 is the same film. If you order direct from CatLabs, I believe it is shipped from the US, plus it is frequently available from Freestyle and B&H. While they don't have 220, they may be persuaded to add it if there is interest.
 
Alright alright alright. So we now know that this is an excellent film developed 'normally'. And for regular 220 usage, just great.

But.... I already have projects in mind where this crazy, random monotone psychedelia would add another dimension to the image. Just gotta pick the right subject matter to let this funk ride rip!
Just look at those patterns in that messed up emulsion...

And if someone shoots a roll that isn't splotched, would it be defective? :D

Maybe FunkyGrey would be a better name. Hopefully they will be able to remedy the emulsion issue.
 
Yahoo! Shanghai 220 film has arrived by Nokton48, on Flickr

This arrived yesterday. I'm going to test this stuff in my newly CLA'ed Mamiya C22 with 220 Back. Developer will be D23 1:1 as I remember that worked well with 120 Shanghai 100. An old school emulsion, so just water, metol, and sulphite. Fixer will be fresh TF-4

Just need to finish the roll of PanF+ that's in the C22

The film is fine. It only does this if developed with Cinestill DF 96 Monobath! So if you want 'art', use Monobath!

Yes, that's what I meant! Make it grungy with a monobath when you need that look.
 
Shanghai film does not even qualify as an art film. I will not be buy any 220 backs. Money well saved. We can close the thread now.

Not King, just smart with my money. I will stick to Kodak, Ilford, Rollei and Fuji and 120 film. Not sinking ships.
