A little off topic, but welcome to APUG, Sotiris!

Back to topic... I'm sure Ferrania will upload data sheets once they have a product. And they've said they intend to cooperate with existing industry and fill gaps instead of trying to be the end-all do-everything-themselves photographic film manufacturer.

Suggest as impractical as the others
a) data sheet will only be available after testing a production run
b) commercial companies don't help competitors
 
I thought i would quickly bang up a concept artwork design for the final film release after the first production run has been done.
What do you think Dave?
I think it would be cool to keep the retro Ferrania logo if possible, of course there is alot of things that would want to be refined with this, but you get the general idea.

It's a little goofy, reminds me of grocery store brand film from the 80's.

I don't mean to be mean, but the multi-color bit is a little overkill.

lol, maybe so, the wording could be all made one colour, but that logo was used back in the day, but i agree more so on advertising material rather than the actual film itself.
I also would prefer the name Ferraniachrome for their reversal films and ferraniacolour for their negative films.

I love the "Ferraniacolor" logo!! It does not look "goofy" to me. It looks as if the box is screaming "come on, i can't hardly wait to shoot some CoLoR pics!"
 
It is a nice design. If I may give 2 suggestions:
1- There's a bit too much red. The bottom part with "color reversal film" could be in black. That would be better for separation from the film Ferrania logo.

2- The DX code could be 003854 which is the old code for Imation Chrome 100. On the bottom of the label it should be DXn.

Hi Sotiris,

Thanks for the suggestions - here are some quick responses:

1. When we actually have film, we will have data sheets - and while we don't expect that 95% of our customers will bother downloading these, we will of course make them available to all interested parties through our website.
2. Cooperation is a two-way street, of course. Currently, we have to focus on our own road and we have a series of huge tasks in front of us before we will be able to look up from our work and see what else is out there... However, if Kodak, or any other company, wishes to contract our services, they know how to get in touch! We are very accessible.

I've been a graphic designer for about 20 years. I worked in the music business mostly - making CD covers and posters and websites.

Everything you've seen so far on our website and Kickstarter has been my doing - except the original FILM Ferrania logo, which was done in Italy more than a year ago - and acknowledging of course that Ferrania history is full of amazing designs that I have used as a basis for the "new" look.

But with that said - we want a timeless identity that spans not just a logo but all packaging, website, etc. etc. Something that nods to the past but is modern and unique. Something that will look amazing today and 20 years from now. Something that can endure just about anything we throw at it.

As such, we're going to hire a proper creative studio to make our new identity.

Until then, we'll continue to take cues from the past designs and just keep everything looking fresh...

Well i must say you have certainly done a great job on the website.
Cant wait to see what you guys come up with next year.
Right now im itching to get my hands on my first roll, i cant wait to shoot it!

I couldnt find the correct DX number for Imation Chrome 100 when i googled it, so i used one for what was supposed to be a 36 exposure roll of solaris! lol

What exactly is DXn? Ive only seen this on a couple of Kodak products, My rolls of Elitechrome and Provia dont show this. I take it that it was an improvement to the original DX code system? I could not find any images of the DX logo, and didnt have time to draw one up, so i just wrote DX there. lol


Of course, as I said this was a rough concept and i would not expect Ferrania to even use it, however i would be very much humbled if they did base their design on this :wink:

I love the design of the 35mm and 120 packaging for the new films to be delivered to the Kickstarter backers (2015). Good job, "Mystery American"!

I think that would be a good starting point -- as long as 3M does not claim copyrights...

3M wont own any copyrights, the Ferrania name/logo was all sold with the company when 3M exited the business.
Now using the Imation/scotch branding would be a different story, and there is no way we will ever see the 3M or imation logo on any more Ferrania products (thankfully!)

I think that Film Ferrania have stated this this packaging is a one off limited run for the first batch.
While i dont mind this logo/branding, It is very much reminiscent of the 3M days, in fact im pretty sure that logo was introduced some time shortly after 3M bought Ferrania.

However, we do have alot to thank 3M for, thanks to them, they built the LRF and upgraded the plant.

About DXn, I was on the same boat as you until I found this:

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica]A more recent addition to the DX standard is DXn, which includes information encoded on the film itself in the form of bar-codes. This allows automated printers to determine the film type to adjust color and contrast settings. It also includes the frame number, which some machines will print on the back of the print. DXn coding is only used at the printing stage, and does not affect the camera in any way.
All ILFORD films produced since November 1999 are fully DXn encoded.

Dave, just one question from me. I believe I asked you about whether Ferrania will be improving the granularity of the 100iso e6 film and you mentioned that this will be the first improvement. Perhaps you could enlighten us perhaps by asking the talented chemists in Italy how one exactly goes about this process? I imagine with the original formula the granularity would be 'set' into the emulsion. I would love to know how hard the task is to reengineer an emulsion from an rms of 13 to one to rival astia 100f (rms7). Thanks!

Dave wont need to compete with Fuji or Kodak products after they stop manufacture?
You will only have the option of Agfa or Dave or digital.
Dave needs to re-engineer to restart production.
Do you also want to know how he is going to reengineer hens to lay chickens?

I'd guess it's very hard!! Fuji achieved it through decades of trying...
I shoot medium format so RMS 13 is still "very fine grain" to me!!
 
RMS 13 is quite grainy in 35mm for an ISO 100 film, but in bigger formats it won't matter that much I think.
(Unfortunately I shoot only 35mm slides)
