Let's See Them Darkrooms

I found an old picture I had taken of my darkroom built back in Summer of 1981. In between the hot/cold lines of plumbing I put a board to fit and drilled at a sharp angle holes to accept dowel rods to hold my graduates. All my chemistry was stored at the bottom and an adjacent closed(not shown) and the prints were dried on the table at the far right where you can only see the top, I had three fiber mesh screens pulled across fir strips to dry them on. the sink is 8' long and 3" wide.

The large try at the right was of course for washing up to 11x14 prints. My old GraLab timer on the wall is still in service despite it's age. The Besler enlarger is right behind me where I took that picture.

Four 4x5 negatives processed in my darkroom.

The negatives have been processed four at a time in a slosher which I've transferred through the tubs from left to right. The first tub is a pre-soak. Then follows Xtol developer, odourless stop bath, and rapid fixer. The fixed negatives are inspected under a bright light to confirm that they are good.

I just completed construction of a new darkroom. These photos only show the wet room, the dry room that stores prints and negatives and is set up for mounting and matting is not completed yet.

I like the fact it does not have a bunch of open shelves full of chems and darkroom articals collecting dust, makes it easier to wipe down.

The long protruding shelf just over the sink encloses a duct with a powerful exhaust fan and vents directly over the dev/stop, fixer, toner and Permawash trays. It draws the fumes right off the trays. And as the sink itself is quite deep from front to back it also moves the water supplies closer so that I can reach them more easily and it also acts as a shelf.

Looks just great. That's about the best, least cluttered setup I've ever seen. A wonderful space for an excellent print craftsman.

Thanks Michael. I've been without darkroom since I moved more than a year and a half ago. Last night was the first time I mixed any chemistry in two years, some film developer.

Wow two 810 Dursts with colorheads!!!! Very cool! Are they both set up for 8x10 printing?

Brought in another shelf unit for more storage and better organization.
All assembled on limited budget.

Predator Mode

The room is a L shape so we had an unusual layout and we have ceiling heights that vary in the closets so it's definitely a little unorthodox. Nonetheless, it's a joy to work in.
