I ran across this artist in the UK that prints some beautiful images in both cyano and photogravure of flowers - made me think of giving this a try - https://www.rosalindhobley.com/cyanotype-prints/dogroses1blue.

Dave, a belated 'thank you' for the reference to Rosalind Hobley's gravures. They are beautiful! I am guessing she's using Prussian Blue ink, or some close equivalent. I have a mental bookmark to try this out with figure works once I become more proficient at printing in ink.

I am still waiting for some tarletan but I am finally ready to start rolling my etching press over here on this side of the mountain. In the meantime, I am still printing kallitypes. (Given the cost of photopolymer plates, I expect to keep active with kallitypes as a quick way to make a print.) I'll try to post a new image over the weekend.

I had some weak cyanotypes I thought would be good for gumovers but the gum layer made the darks of the cyanotype weaker instead of stronger. I could probably put a black gum layer to bring the darks back but I'd be better off starting over I think. It has been a long time since I've done a gumover and could have sworn the gum layer made the cyanotype darker but I can't find those prints....

I did a little brush work on the falls of the first one. The second one has two gum layers trying to save it. I think it looks better as a cyanotype.

Saunders, I am glad you enjoyed her gravures, her technique is excellent and she has good taste as well. I will give that a try next time I am in the studio. When I was down in Raleigh for my daughter's wedding I stopped in Jerry's Artarama and picked up some deep blue ink so I am ready whenever I get up and running again. My epson 3880 finally expired and I just bought a P900, which seems to be working fine for "normal" prints - haven't tried it for digital negs yet. Between that and switching to a mac - it has been a steep learning curve. Fortunately, Clay graciously sent me a DPT quad file for the P900 so I can start from there.

Her work inspired me to try some more florals ... these attached cyanotype images were the last three negs my 3880 printed before it died! They all of items from the wedding... all I could muster was to do some cyanotypes, getting the DPT set up for my new printer will take some time. I am delighted to hear you have obtained a press and will be able to produce your own gravures.

Regards

Dave

When I was down in Raleigh for my daughter's wedding

Dave, those prints are lovely. By coincidence, my daughter Maeve is also getting married, next week! Must be something in the water.

If you haven't yet sprung for 365nm UV LEDs, the Chinese lights I referenced earlier work well. Clay just put a set in one of his boxes and found that they emit about 75 percent of Jon Cone's lights. Considering they're $50 a roll as compared to $200 a roll for Cone's, I'm happy to take a 25% performance hit for a 75% less expensive product.

The Polymetaal press I bought needed a handle. I found a salvage sailboat helm, had a mount machined for it, and voila! a huge upgrade. I also got it a proper press bed and am ready to roll. See attached.

Saunders,

Thanks for your generous complements, hope things are going smoothly for your daughter's wedding and it is a joyous event.

Your press looks great - love the wheel adaptation, and the view looks wonderful as well.

Also thanks for the info on the UV lights, Clay also sent me some info on the lights and I am thinking about building/buying a DTP burner rather than using the studio tube type burner which is VERY slow.

Dave

Sanders, did you end up buying a press instead of making one?

I did! By chance I found a great Polymetaal press from Holland, up in a holler near the Penland School for Crafts. Completely random find -- the owner is a potter who used the press to work clay. It needed a wheel, thus the sailboat helm.

I just today assembled the last bits I need to print on it. Wedding plans will keep me busy through Easter. Hopefully I'll be printing gravures in April.

I'm cross-posting here to see if anyone here wants to play in a new alt process print exchange. Here's the list of confirmed participants:

1. Me
2. Clay Harmon
3. Ray Bidegain
4. Kerik Kouklis
5. Christopher Perez (My_Photolife)
6. @fgorga
7. @BHuij
8. @Patrick Robert James
9. @Dwayne Martin

At least four (me, Clay, Ray and Christopher) will likely share photogravures. I'd prefer to keep the group small but if you missed the other thread and want to participate, now's the time to speak up.

Another nice pair, @ced. If I have to choose though, I like the brown one better. Are these coat and expose x times and develop once like Grier does with his Printmaker's Friend?

I finally printed a gravure on the Polymetaal press I found last autumn. I'm not sure why I procrastinated -- it was much easier than I had imagined. I am at the bottom of this learning curve and yet the gravure I made is on a par with my kallitype (in my Photrio media if you want to compare) of the same image.

On the theory that the right number of presses is always one more* than you currently own: I saw a really gorgeous Rembrandt Pelican press for sale locally as I was heading out the door to my daughter's wedding, for a small fraction of its replacement cost. So tomorrow I'm picking up the Rembrandt and moving it in.

Very nice, especially for a first print. Can't wait to see the results as you climb the learning curve... lots of printmaking 'tricks' to apply to a basic 'pull'.

As for the 'correct' numbers of things, this is my experience as well. However, I am envious of the fact you have space for a single press much less two!!!! 🤪
