I'd say that's open to argument -- starting points, what your gear weighs and how physically fit your are.
For me, with large format gear, I might cut that distance down some...

I wanted to capture the quality of light of Arizona's Summer monsoonal flow. The challenge was to find a balance between the drama of the clouds and a natural feeling of the light. I didn't want a heavy black sky, but to still maintain the impact of the amazing clouds that occur during the season, and not have it look like a snap shot.
