"There is nothing worth photographing more than 100 yards from the car." - Brett Weston

I'd say that's open to argument -- starting points, what your gear weighs and how physically fit your are.

For me, with large format gear, I might cut that distance down some...

I never hiked very far into the dunes, so I have not take photographs of them nearly as great as yours.

The weight of the photographic equipment including the tripod increase by the cube of the distance walked.

[photographic equipment including the tripod] weight increase] = distance^3

Looking over my shoulder at the GX680 on a heavy tripod...

I think the argument makes sense!

Honestly, I'll hump the thing a mile round trip, but it's bulky and awkward to carry. Same is true and then some of large format. The bulky is what wears me out, so I tend to stay on trails where I can haul stuff in a wagon, or where pretty is half a mile away, not miles, plural.

Big Pine (2021). Platinum-toned Kallitype, printed this evening on Revere Platinum paper.

More than 100 inches from the car.

I wanted to capture the quality of light of Arizona's Summer monsoonal flow. The challenge was to find a balance between the drama of the clouds and a natural feeling of the light. I didn't want a heavy black sky while still maintaining the impact of the amazing clouds that occur during the season, and to not have it look like a snap shot.

Are those real cacti or are they the inflatable ones you carry in your car? <<wink>> <<wink>>

Stephen, here's a 5x7 (Deardorff, dagor, Tri-X) of similar subjects albeit lacking the impressive cumulonimbus clouds in your fine photo.
