I haven't tried double exposing since I had the FE many moons ago. I doubt I'll try that with the S2. I'll have enough on my hands figuring out its regular operation it appears.

Is this not true of the screw mount Leicas, too?

On the Leica IIIf I almost bought, yes: wind film/shutter, then set shutter speed. Otherwise, shutter speed dial isn't aligned with index. I suspect it's true of all screw-mount Leicas.

Agreed!

As a point to consider, I wonder if the shutter speed must be set after winding the shutters, or if it matters.
Yes, the shutter speed dial rotates upon release, so you need to wind on before setting the speed. Note also that slow speeds are set on a dial concentric with the rotating dial. When you see the camera you'll understand. Also if you touch the shutter speed dial during exposure the speed won't be accurate, but no damage will be done. See Mike Butkus' invaluable site for a down-loadable instruction manual. http://www.butkus.org/chinon/nikon/nikon_sp/nikon_sp.htm

What I would give for one of these sweet cameras. I saw it not long ago but the price nearly caused me to black out.

Had one of those once. Sold it to a friend of mine who bought it for his daughter who I think was in college at that time. After she received it, the camera was almost immediately stolen from her car. I did not really realize what a fine camera that was until AFTER I sold it. Such is life which when added to my stupidity causes me to want to cry sometimes. Of course after the milk has been spilt, it is too late......Regards!

I don't recall seeing anything about that in the manual I downloaded. You have one, do it both ways and see.

Would that not be applicable for any rangefinder, such as the Leica M? I've had no problem with those.

I would think that after using your new camera a few times you will start to do like the rest of us do or should do with our rangefinder cameras and that is learn to live with paralax and quit the constant worrying about it.....regards!

Here's a link to a youtube video that I made just so you can see what I was speaking about...

That did it. You two guys...

Now I want one. Long ago, I looked at a chrome SP and, as much as I thought I'd like it, it just didn't seem special enough - especially for the price. But the S2 has character - I like its all-metal look. I like the rotating shutter speed dial and the concentric slow speed dial. I like the sound of the wind lever and the shutter. The Cameraquest article isn't dissuading me...

I put my eye to the viewfinder of an SP in a local shop earlier this year. I decided to stick to the S2 because the viewfinder was so uncluttered. I also recognized that if I got the SP, I would want the 35mm and the 105mm that correspond with those extra framelines. Staying with the S2 makes it much more difficult to justify buying more lenses in the system.

Don't fight the feeling...just reach out...

The cluttered S3 viewfinder was the primary reason I didn't like that one. May could have lived with it in time but decided against it.

One aspect of this camera that still puzzles me a bit is the dial to the left as you hold it at the rewind knob they call the Syncro-Select dial. I don't intend on using it with flash and wondered where it should be set just to shoot normally without flash bulbs or electronic flash. There is also a + or - dial under that one. I imagine you cold get some screwed up shots if these are not set right. since there can be a time lag in milliseconds depending on how that dial is set.

The manual doesn't seem to indicate where this is set if shooting without flash. If you don't have the high speed dial set to X I don't suppose the Syncro Select dial matters.

If you're not using flash, just set it to X. It really won't make any difference without flash, but that's really 1/50 of a second and the limit of using electronic flash sync with the s2.

From the manual I gleaned it has to be on X and the shutter speed dial to X as well for flash.

X on the shutter speed dial is the max sync speed (1/50), but you are welcome to use slower speeds as well.

It works just like any other flash sync in that you cannot exceed the max speed or your negative will be unevenly illuminated. This is really no issue at all unless you're using a flash that is attached to the shoe (which is not hot, technically) and plugged in to the PC port.

If you wanted to use flash, you're better off with an FM2n.

I don't mind at all. Maybe someone could benefit from it. The body of the S2 is about identical to the old Nikon F. I have three FTN's so very familiar with that. I don't plan on using flash with the S2. I seldom use that anyway with any camera if I can get by without it.

The place I ordered the camera from is in Atlanta so, not being that far off I hope to get it sooner than next Friday.

I ran across a super good deal on a Nikkor 3.5cm f2.5 C lens for this camera. Is there any recommendation on which or type of viewfinder for it since there's no 35mm frame line on the S2?

Thanks but I'm not looking for the camera. I have one of those coming this week. I'm talking about the viewfinder accessory that mounts on the hotshoe for a 35mm lens.

I do wish I'd seen that before I bought the one I did, however.

I saw the one for sale... like it... but I don't have PayPal anymore (*)

(*) my account expired or the checking account it was linked to expired due to a long period of inactivity - many years later the state contacted me and was able to send me the funds - $60.

I have the original Nikon accessory finder and find it less than ideal, neat looking though.

Less than ideal meaning it doesn't work as intended?

I received the camera today...looks good. The lens looks immaculate as well. First impressions was the rangefinder patch is not near as big or defined as the Leica and makes focusing a bit harder...at least for me since I'm use to the Leica. The infinity lock is a bit aggravating but I'll get use to that. There's a "button" on the front you can move to the side slightly and get it out of locked position. For all practical purposes, the 50mm frame lines are so far left/right and top/bottom you don't really need them.

Other than that, I need to put it through the paces with a roll of film. Pictures to follow.
