But if Cinestill ends up being the only place available to get the new 250D with anti-halation (assuming I'll be able to get it at all)... then I'd buy from them. They probably market it as 400D, but knowing what it is, nothing stopping me from just shooting it at 250 and developing myself in ECN-2 minus the remjet bath.

If Cinestill will indeed have access to Vision3 films with AHU the 250D will be film that I'd be least interested in. Portra 400 is better or at least as good, doesn't need ECN-2* developer and is not more expensive than Cinestill 400D. On the other hand there is nothing like 500T or 50D available among the regular C-41 films.

* You could argue that you can mix your own ECN-2 developer at home and save half a EUR that way, but I'd guess there are very few people that will spend 20 EUR for a roll of film and would then be priced out by (relatively) cheap C-41 processing.

I'm already set up to do ECN-2 dev at home for less than $1 USD per roll, and I've never particularly liked Portra 400. Guess there's no accounting for taste. Vision3 250D looks excellent to me.

Edit: But you're right that if Cinestill's markup is bad enough, I won't be buying as much. The FPP always sold 24 exposure rolls of remjet 250D for $9.99 USD. I usually use it in my half frame for snapshots of family and whatnot.

Thanks for updating; this all sounds very nice indeed!
Noteworthy is that the new AHU Vision3 will replace the present product, not be an addition to the line up as I understood before. The process-surviving antistatic layer is a real benefit; I can attest to present Vision3 being a veritable dust magnet. Not a major issue, but if that aspect improves, this would certainly be helpful.

The energy savings mentioned by Kodak are probably a major factor in this, as is the removal of a processing step and the impact on wastewater flows this will have. There's presently a real push towards more sustainable products and production, and this change fits very well in this picture.

And it finally eliminates borates from all of Kodak's colour processes - in terms of volumes B&W neg probably isn't an issue, but colour is.

There are alternative baths to PB-2 - PB-C1/PB-C2, which are carbonate-based.

The only downside I think about is the loss of the look of remjet removed halation film popularised by cinestill.
On the personal level, perhaps will get some Vision 500T rolls to freeze under summer for some Asian city trip future. Anecdotically I bought a roll of Cinestill 800T in 2020 and it lingered till last year.

Thanks for the reminder! So far it is still quite under the radar without an official release? No relevant results from google searches of Kodak 5256. Rather an historical Ektachrome dupe film.

Late PE mentioned that Ektar is a redesigned MP film. I can't find a citation about the still Portras being further removed from motion picture films but do recall some discussion about it.

As far as I know, it is still under the radar.
Kodak only really spoke of it on an Instagram post last year about a music video, as it was shot on "an unreleased motion picture stock, based on a classic photography film stock".

It came up in a thread about the V3 AHU on Cinematography.com earlier in April, with another cinematographer mentioning having shot some of it.
Seems like they let those cinematographers also test the Portra stock while testing out the AHU V3 stock.

I can only speculate, but the guy providing the sample images seems to have some connection to one of the film crews being allowed to pilot the new stock. Probably has a buddy who could smuggle him the tail end of a big roll. Lucky guy.

Just want to let you know that this new version is already on sale in Budapest. Lab4Art gets it directly from Kodak and it is available as 250D and 500T. I haven't shot my first roll yet, but it is the most affordable color film you can get here.

I may email them too and see if they'll ship to the US. I can't think of a color neg film I'd rather shoot than remjet-free, AHU-included Vision3 250D.

Kodak are understood to be testing with trade users new vision 3 films for motion picture without a remjet layer , replaced by a standard ahu which would also makes it easier to process for still photography. This is distinct from vision 3 without remjet made for cinestill with halation effects. The below is understood to be a briefing note for the new films but is not ‘publicly’ available yet, posted by memorylabfilm in australia.
