I've made my first serious attempt at printing a 6x9 negative (taken with my Fuji GW690III) and whoa...large negatives are so nice!

Nothing fancy (the image might end up in my gallery here), 6x9" print on a 8x10" Fomaspeed 312 RC.

I began at contrast 2, but dialed up my magenta slider until I felt I had the shadows where I wanted them. I then made teststrips on the focal point, my friend Olle's face, until I'd reached a good exposure here. I then made teststrips for Sally's face (the secondary focal point, not in focus but still important) to see where it would be in relation to Olle's face. The work print was more than decent, but I added burn-ins on all borders (different strengths depending on subject matter), I dodged Sally's face slightly and then burned in some distracting areas.

I'm not by any means a good printer but I'm getting there. Every time I can manage a print using contrast 2 I'm pretty happy (earlier I always went for maximum contrast). Dodging, burning and making test strips is becoming very natural, and my negatives are normally more than decent. My collection of decent portraits is growing almost every session, which is the best part of it all.

6 or 7 more hand coated paper negatives
drying atm, maybe to be printed ? not sure
between my spent developer and this old contrasty emulsion
i am having a fun time split processing the paper
with 3-7 minute daylight exposures ..
not sure, but i might hand color them ...

2 rolls of Premium Arista 400 in Rodinal 1+50 for 11 mins and another 2 rolls in Rodinal 1+50 for 9 mins.

I may need Grade 2 and Grade 3 filter to print them.

Nothing! The teacher said my 8x10 prints for the art show were perfect! (That's not entirely true, but I'm pleased enough with the critique that I won't make any more for that subject).

Oh! I did print some 8x10 FOMABROM paper yesterday... I hate to say it but the shadow separation was amazing....

The printing work not the content or context of the image itself.

The only negative was about 2 images were stronger than the third and I could consider using just two as they were strong enough on their own.

The third was more about not having a better image and composition, he said I should crop a bit but I suggested if I did that the focus would change and he agreed some viewers might not focus on the right thing and the point might be lost. I was trying to make it a 3 part series but as 2 it also works well so I may do that.

It was a really nice critique as I feel this instructor has more capability than many of the others. So I was glad.

some more paper
these were exposed in a graflex slr
so i didn't get the same pictorial softness
the meniscus lens likes to give me ...

the paper was coated 2x ..
once about 5-6 months ago and then a few days ago...
and it is about 6 stops slower than it used to be ...

Thank you, Ned. It was his first birthday He lives on the other side of the country to me so I don't often get the chance to photograph him. Unfortunately, I didn't get many that day. So many little ones crawling and running around that getting a clear shot of him was nigh on impossible.

A print of a friend. Her husband wanted a portrait. I don't know why the scan of the print looks so grainy. Nothing like the actual thing...

35mm HP5+ in Xtol, using Ilford MGIV in Ethol LPD, toned in Moersch MT-3 on dark yellow setting, and followed with Harman Selenium.

Printed some negatives shot in very flat but brilliant day. Premium Arista 400 in Rodinal 1+50 for 11mins.

Print required Grade 5 and additional burning with Grade 0.

12 sheets arista edu 400. Shot today in the park with my students at 200 in xtol stock 7 min. in tray. Well see if it holds up to tray dev when they dry. Hopefully no or light scratches. Foma films are so delicate.

Try PMK Pyro or Pyrocat HD. They will somewhat harden the emulsion during processing. Makes the Foma less fragile.

8 prints on 7x11 on RC paper, this was some of the 11x14 that I had left, trying to run through it by cutting it in half for "8x10 assignments"

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into it. I've been paring down my stock of developers though to try and be mor consistent
. But maybe a little test should be in order.

That's true. Xtol is a damned fine developer too! But since you mentioned how soft the Foma emulsion is, I figured I would mention what might alleviate some of those issues.
Another developer I've been using is the Harvey's Panthermic 777 developer. It's available as special order from Bluegrass Packaging in Kentucky. I'm convinced this developer hardens the emulsion substantially. But I also think the preferred method with this developer and sheets would be replenished deep tanks and hangers. If you're doing tray I'm not sure how it would work out.

Anyway, you can learn technique to avoid scratches with any developer. People have been doing it for years. It's a matter of practice, for sure.
