Here's an easy way to understand this: fine art is what I make, and derivative crap is what all those other people make :smile:

Once someone said art is whatever anyone considers art.
That's how the world goes.
To me, fine art photography is what Nadar and Atget and Cartier-Bresson and Frank and Winogrand did. Reflecting human condition, and, being able to say different things to different people using a single image.
To me, most art photography is not art nor photography.

I'm surprised this topic has only garnered mere 16 pages thus far.

Key to this subject is the fact that art rimes supremely well with fart. Imagine how a fine fart would have smelled like.

Personally, I would prefer a fine tart.

Work done with an artistic purpose and the requisite skill to communicate this.

Defining art is really not difficult - PRODUCING it is the hard part!

Picasso is quoted to have said: I don't know what that art is and if I knew I wouldn't tell anybody.

I thought the discussion between art and fine art was settled a long time ago in another thread.

The subject is never settled. Participants in the thread just wear themselves out discussing it and take time off to recharge their batteries so they can have another go at it later. What is interesting is that none of the participants use the time off to read about the issue so they will be able to offer more informed opinions. They just drag the dead horse out of the barn and beat it some more. The horse is dead so he is not really in a position to object.

You know what those degree acronyms actually stand for, right?
BFA= Big F******ng A**hole
MFA = Master F******ng A**hole (or Mother, take your pick)

BFA up here stands for Bachelor of F All... but hey, that degree opened the door to an education degree, which led to teaching art and photography. So, it wasn't a waste of time after all.
