Woo hoo!! Snow! I think we've gotten around a foot or so in the last 24 hours. That's almost as much as we got the whole last two winters combined in Iowa (14" in two winters). Roads look ok (I walked the dogs on ours), but our driveway is not. The tractor still had the mowing deck on it and is blocked into the garage by the Challenger (which has a foot of snow on it). The plow blade is now attached, but isn't completely hooked up. Though this stuff is so fluffy that the blower would be better.

Yes bad in the sense that it makes a mess of a person's calendar of events, and for those who just wouldn't prepare, park and hunker down. That said, it has been over a foot of snow in the past 24hrs on the New Jersey coast, and almost that much more to come. Wind has been pretty fierce but amazingly we still have power. If this had been freezing rain and ice it would probably be a completely different story. I am on my way out the door now for my first shoveling session. Wish it were a printing session.
Partly cloudy & around 30. I'm not jealous of folks on the East coast at all.

It's only bad for those who didn't stay home and are trying to get there. I wish I could say I spent the afternoon taking pictures of the beautiful fluffy snow, but I spent it shoveling, plowing, and sledding instead. Not exactly in that order.
I feel for those who are stuck somewhere (there are a number of vehicles stuck on the PA turnpike), but I do have to wonder why they were out driving when they kept telling us there was going to be a bunch of snow.
My flight from LA yesterday made an "unexpected stop" in Salt Lake for a "flight crew adjustment." As such, I missed my connection in Minneapolis and spent the afternoon there. Got into Pittsburgh at 11PM with a message from my wife saying she couldn't get to the airport. Had to rent an SUV to get home, and the roads were awful.
59F and cloudy. Expected low tonight, 42.
No snow in north central pa., but three of my daughters live in Lancaster County where they are still getting bombed. My oldest daughter had to climb out a window, the snow was drifting over half way up her doors, and couldn't get out.

Already feeling sore muscles from shoveling and am nowhere near being able to get out of the driveway -- but then, neither do we have a need to. As we are on a well, we've had containers of drinking water squirreled away in the fridge since last night, as well as a bunch of plastic totes full for toilet flushing. Have been keeping a low fire going in the woodstove so it will be quick to ramp up heat from that if we lose power to run the regular furnace.
It happens every now and then -- just consider it 'camping', but with a nicer bed. So far the winds are light and the power is on. And with subfreezing temperatures, even without power we can keep the food stocks OK. (And some years all the snow can be handled with a broom!)

Wow, cool! I remember doing that as a kid in NYS. We had a huge storm when I was around 3 or 4 and we couldn't get out the back door (the snow was higher than the top of the door). We went out the front (which was above the hill) and went from the porch straight to the snow pile. Eventually, they dug a tunnel to the back. I don't think I have the photos, but my dad would usually park the Jeep or Scout on the road and take a picture to show how much snow we had.
Brian - couldn't you have stayed in LA?
Bet it was nicer out there. But glad you got home safely. I haven't been too happy about the quality of plowing in this area, but at least we can get out. Knock on wood - we rarely lose power from storms here. We had been getting little two second power blinks and they finally solved and fixed that.

We had a high surf warning here too, and flooding resulted. Not quite the same context of David's rub!
Yes, we never lost power either, owing i think to there not being ice in this storm. The winds were high here (caused the beach and bay flooding) and still we held up. I imagine that just about all the damage that could be done to power distribution here was abated by the near total destruction of superstorm Sandy. I had no power for 11 days from that storm.
and this morning 5:45 was a clear bright full moon in the west sky (also aiding the flooding). Lit the two feet of snow up quite nicely.
I hate to sound like I'm rubbing it it but the question is "weather where you are ?". SUNNY south Florida Miami to be exact. Not a cloud in the sky - clear blue, light breeze and just over 60F.

Brian - couldn't you have stayed in LA?
I would have loved to, but it was a business trip, and business was over. It was actually in the 50's with rain the first couple days, but by Wednesday, we were back in the 60's with sunshine.
I look forward to next week when I get to explain the one day rental of an AWD SUV on my expense report.
A pretty day-a few high clouds, the sun was warm, temp in the low 60's. Looking like spring- I hope El Nino gets his butt in gear and gives us more rain!

One of the coldest days in Bangkok for a few decades. No AC on and no fan in the afternoon but still sitting around in shorts and a t shirt with the window open at 18 degrees C / 64 degrees f. I am seriously considering shutting the window. Amazing how subjective cold can be. In England, people would be walking around outside in vests and shorts. In Bangkok today, many kids went to school with woolen mitts and a little hat on. I swear I'm not making this up.
Anybody in NYC right now who reads this and doesn't exactly feel full of sympathy for my plight, I'll understand.

Well, it's warm enough here that I didn't zip my jacket while walking the dogs. But I still had on long undies and a couple of layers under the coat. (it was about 17 F, but no wind)
Nice and sunny. There was a 2 hour delay to the start of school because the roads never got cleaned up yesterday. They're passable, but not clean from edge to edge and narrower than normal. The Mustang and its worn out tires are better off letting the Escape handle all transportation for now.
I fully understand. In Southern California when we have a cold snap it gets so cold that we have to wear a sweater or a jacket until 10:00 in the morning when the temperature gets to 74°F [23°C]. The everyone takes off the sweaters and jackets. Since they are not used to wearing those close they just set them down and forget about them. Children leave them in school and never take them home. That just fills up the school's storage space for abandoned clothes. The adults are just as bad dropping clothes in food stores, restaurants, shopping malls, parks and gas stations. Charities are constantly sending trucks out to pick up the clothes.
Weather here is windy and very warm. End of January and we got 12 C!
