We are looking at 25cm of snow overnight and temperatures dropping to the -20s for the next week. Skiers are excited about the expected snowfall

Hope you and your neighbors are all good! That was some major wind. I guess Southmoreland Elementary and middle schools didn't get power back until about 5pm Friday. We were apparently lucky to get ours back as quickly as we did. And Carson's (a restaurant in town) lost part of its roof.

It's now just 19F and we got a little snow today. It's supposed to be 40s tomorrow and 60 by Tuesday.

We have a stand by generator (24KW, enough to sustain the house). Power came back around 11AM Saturday, 37 hours on the genny, we stayed comfortable. Most of the neighbors either hunkered down or left. Our next door neighbor teaches at Southmoreland HS, they've been here over 20 years and still don't have backup. One thing most people don't think about, if you have a well and the power goes out, you don't have water and you can't flush a certain item.

In the middle of a 46-day dry spell, with temperatures more than 15F higher than typical year, only now starting to drop down to more typical temperature pattern...in the middle of what has been declared as the worst drought period in 1200 years, as proven by examination of tree rings.

Yeah, the folks who are emergency planning specialists talk about the need for multiple 20 gallon containers of water...when one flush of a toilet is 2 gallons, you don't get many days of flushing with one container of water. If power goes out for days, it is time for a slit trench to be dug, and commune with nature in order to ration the water for drinking only.
How much gasoline does it take to continuously run a generator for a day?! Backup diesel generators to keep cell towers operational...who keeps them all topped off and operational?! It will become apparent when analog land lines are the only thing operating.

That and the fridge are why I want a genny.

Many for home use run on propane tanks. How much propane depends on how much stuff you're running (like whether a certain garage is included).

..and it takes 1.38 gallons of propane to equal the energy of 1 gallon of gas. For folks who have a big propane tank supplied via mobile truck to supply their ordinary cooking and heating uses, propane generator perhaps makes sense. But for someone who simply use 20 gal. propane for their BBQ grill, I'm not so sure it is practical.
OTOH there are natural gas generators.

Yes, there are natural gas generators, but you need to live somewhere that has supply lines otherwise you do what we did, install a propane fired genny.

I can give you the name of the guy who installs them around here, he's a retired WPP lineman and certified Generac installer.

The Columbia Gorge is the only natural break in the Cascade Range. Cold Arctic air flows into the eastern plains then as high pressure racing to low pressure comes roaring through the gorge with winds regularly exceeding a hundred miles an hour. Portland city center is about thirty miles west of the gorge, so the wind are only thirty to forty miles an hour sustained with the occasional gust into the seventies. Our temperature dropped from in the forties yesterday into the teens today. Currently, we are waiting for the warmer ocean air aloft to drop its precipitation through the fairly shallow cold layer and bring us the gift of freezing rain. There is a line of about a dozen conifer that divides our property from the neighbors on our south side. Some are over a hundred feet tall and even with regular maintenance, branches come down. Eastern wind events normally don't drop many but there is one large one that is caught in a maple on my side of the property line with most of it in my neighbors yard. If the winds stay strong, the ice won't weigh down the branches as much. I'll be happy if we don't lose power.

For the last 3 days in Calgary we have been sitting at around -30C to -40C (approx -30F to -40F) with widchill taking us as low as -45C. It is suppose to warm up to -22C tomorrow and then to +4C on Christmas Day. The airport here has had a lot of delayed and cancelled flights leaving travelers stranded. Vancouver airport was shut down for at least a day this week due to heavy snow with more forcasted for today. I think upwards of a 1000 flights have been cancelled so far. There is a storm headed for central and eastern Canada today so travelers flying out of Toronto may be stranded there for the next couple of days. It is unfortunate that it is happening this close to Christmas when people have been planning to fly home over the holiday.

Sunny, a few white puffy clouds, nice gentle sea breeze and 26C @ midday.
Think I sit out on the front patio later, play some jingles and drink spicy rum and coca cola.

Buckling up, running the heat a bit higher to compensate for the drop. Tied down what I could and getting ready for the 70mph gusts. I expect power to go at some point. Wish me luck boys.

No icemelt nor salt in the stores for a week. Gonna have to improvise.

The quake shook us out of the cold weather and into some wet and warmer conditions (low/hi: 40s/50s). We were having some 28F mornings.

Off to do some kayaking in the morning. King tides should make for good times up one of the bay's sloughs. Won't be as sunny as the day in my image below.

Matt I would trade your weather warning for ours any day of the week - especially today😄

You don't want to have to drive on our roads, amongst the drivers around here, with our current weather!
Don't forget, we have palm trees in the median of the main road through our local community!

Wind roaring 50+MPH, temps steadily dropping from 40f last night to 5f now, and supposed to drop to around 0f soon. Oh yeah, it's snowing. Power is out down the mountain from us, not here(no matter we have a back up genny), trees coming down on wires. Yesterday six phone poles went down over the main road to our small community blocking the road all day until the contractors could get them repaired.
UPDATE: Power poles snapped just below us on the mountain, lines on the ground, we still have power but our neighbors don't.

Moved to Little Rock, Arkansas 5 weeks ago. Woke up and saw this on my computer. Snow is on the ground. Yikes! Best move of my life, love the people here, and it's a beautiful place. But this sure has me remembering my Hawaii days!

Snow is going sideways here. 50mph+ winds, we've dropped below 10. And the lake effect is starting up too.
