Hello. Recently, I was able to start developing film again.
How did I do? Note for the photo: backlit by LED light and still wet, this photo was taken right after removing from the photoflo and hanging.
Rodinal 1:50, ~12ml of Rodinal in ~588ml of water. 14 minutes with agitation for the first 30 seconds and then 10 seconds every minute. For agitation, instead of using the twizzle stick, I used the figure 8 method as recommended by users Andrew O'Neill and mshchem. I was using the Patterson tank this time. Because the fixer was mixed in last November, when I was last developing, I did a leader test. Cleared in about 2 minutes, but I still fixed it for longer just in case. I had already poured the fixer in and started the timer when I remembered about compensating for temperature, but since the fixer is older, I figured that it would be O.K. During the second wash, about 3/4th way through the second set of inversions for the Ilford wash, I ran out of water I had warmed up to 20c, so the rest of the wash was done with water at around 18c-19c.
TL;DR steps taken:
Developed 1:50 for 14 minutes at 20c
Ilford wash method at 20c
Ilford Rapid Fix for 7 minutes at 21c
Ilford wash method at 18c
Photoflo at 18c
The reason the last wash and photoflo were colder is that I did not warm up enough water. Next time, I could try cooling down the fixer by running the bottle under cold water.
But a good book is what the OP needs, the OP has clearly started with some confusing advice and just one source of good advice (or one mentor) is required.
As for books, I have a few. As mentioned before,
The Darkroom Handbook by Michael Langford. However, at the time, I also had
Kodak Pocket Guide to 35mm Photography and
The New Manual of Photography by John Hedgecoe. Over these months, I've picked up a few more:
The Basic Darkroom Book by Tom Grimm,
The New 35mm Photographer's Handbook (revised ed) by Julian Calder and John Garrett,
How to Make Good Pictures by Eastman Kodak (More of a collector's item), and then
Photography Tone Control by Norman Sanders and
Beyond Basic Photography by Henry Horenstein, both of which I have not really read nor looked at too closely. The guidebook to my TLR also has some outdated developing information.
Thankyou!
Which version of Rodinal are you using? There are around 9.
Adox "Adonal" Rodinal from B&H. The bottle says Rodinal, but the product title on the website is Adonal.
Thanks again to everyone for your help and advice.
- Bill
P.S. Unrelated to Tri-X,
according to this PDF from freestyle, AristaEDU Ultra BW 100 developed in Rodinal, 1:25 at 20c for 3 minutes and 30 seconds, is that right?
