Just to give everyone an update:

The portfolio is here in New York. My print is in, Aaron is sending his to me for the first round, then Cem and I are meeting up so he can add his print and we can look at the first three. Next it will be off to the UK, and I hope when it comes back around from Australia however many months down the road we can have an APUG get-together in New York for participants and non-participants to look over the first set of prints.

We're following the same order as in the list, so just check for updates before sending it on, and send it to the next person on the list. Brian is arranging it to take account for both efficient mailing and individual requests not to be responsible for international shipping costs.

Since the first three are all in the New York area, and there are not so many prints to view yet, we're doing the first submissions collaboratively just to get the ball rolling.

Aggie, you add a print the 1st time round, then replace your print on subsequent visits... well that's how I understood it.

I happened to be reading our local (to Australia!) newsgroup and there was some discussion on 'travelling cameras' which is where a group of like minded individuals post a disposable camera around taking one shot at a time. Anyway, what I'm getting to is there was a link posted to a page describing it's journey and I was think we might be able to pinch a few ideas, mainly in that when anyone got the camera they wrote their thoughts/etc. I would probably say you shouldn't critique the pictures, just describe your reactions and maybe the reaction of anyone you show. I wouldn't make it mandatory but I could image a story or two would be interesting and keep interest while it gets to you (which might take a while!)

Aggie--Just wait for the portfolio to come to you, and then put in your first print, and from there on in everything should take care of itself.

Nige--I thought of that myself, but thought maybe we could put it off until the second round. I like the idea very much. How about when the portfolio comes around to you, you can put in a disposable or Lomo or Holga or some such, and we can take it from there?

David, I was just thinking of the written side of it - people e-mailing their experiences (regarding the portfolio!) to be added to the travelling Portfolio page, if deemed interesting.. Maybe there won't be anything although I found the inital description of yours decribing setting it up and the 1st couple of prints going in interesting. Also keeping that page up todate as to the portfolios progress. I do like your idea of including a camera in the traveling portfolio (if it would fit). Once it gets to me I'll access the situation and if it looks like there's room, I'll drop a disposable in.

Also, just how thick is the box... have you mounted your prints (those with prints in it already)?

I was thinking we could open up a thread just to discuss what is in the portfolio once it gets going.

The portfolio holds about twenty mounted, matted prints on 4-ply board, plus there are a couple of pockets inside. So far there are 16 participants, and I don't know how many will be mounting their work (I am), so I don't know how much room there will be to squeeze a camera in, but I bet we can figure out something.

One thing to consider is that if everyone mounts their prints to a uniform standard, that would make it easier to have some sort of exhibition as the portfolio makes the rounds, but maybe it is best to leave that for the future, once we're sure this project really works.

which seemed like the best compromise in terms of light weight (to keep postage costs reasonable), ruggedness, and ease of use (shippable without requiring a box). I bought it at B&H for about $115 including tax. Light Impressions also sells a standard art shipping case custom sized to hold an 11x14" archive box, but it's heavier than the Tenba and has loose straps that could get caught during shipping.

Hey guys, it looks like I am odd man out, but I really think we should reconcider puting a camera in the portfolio. It is a cool idea to put together a chain camera project (there are several going on right now on photo.net), but that is a totally different project.

You are not alone Brian, I also think it would be best to just stick with the portfolio for now. Or maybe start a different activity by those who wish to start the chain camera project.

I have updated the portfolio members page. David, $115 bucks, yikes. Maybe it will work best if I include a check in the portfolio to help off-set that cost? Then next time you get it, just cash the check. We can include an envelope in the porfolio for people to add checks to, to help pay for the box.

Also, I was thinking. If someone has unmounted prints It can't do any harm to submit 2 or 3 unmounted prints aye? If people are submitting 1 unmounted print, might as well slip a few more in since they are so thin and light? Just a thought ...

What about the other stuff? Do we want updates on where the thing is? Just do it thru a forum thread or build it into the portfolio page?

Regarding the cost of the portfolio, a few people have already chipped in--many thanks to those who have. If you want to do so as well, just send me an email, and we can figure out the best method. A check from an Australian bank may cost me more to cash in the U.S. than it's worth, and a U.S bank draft may cost more in Australia than you want to send (but hey, you could always send the true international currency--8x10" sheets of Tri-X). Since transferring funds internationally can be complicated and expensive, and I really don't mind picking up most of the cost for the portfolio as my contribution to APUG, I'd like to keep it all voluntary.

On the camera issue--yeah, let's keep it separate. Maybe later we can change it, if we're inspired to do so. Nothing is written in stone.

On including extra unmounted prints--maybe. Let's see how much room there is. Another option might be to mount multiple small prints on one 11x14" board.

As to updates on the current location, I think Brian was planning to do that on the private portfolio page, but we could also do it in a thread on the forum.

One thing that was mentioned in the portfolio instructions was that there would be a form for including technical information on the back of the print. Since neither Brian nor Sean nor I have devised such a form, and I'm not sure we really need one, I would propose that contributors just include an information sheet with technical and background information, using the prints already in the portfolio as models.

It's still in New York, where the first three participants are located. My print is in. Aaron's is on the way to me, and I'm meeting up with Cem on Friday to look over the portfolio and get his print, and then it's off to the UK on Monday, if everything goes according to plan.

The portfolio is underway. I have Aaron's print (a still life on 1958 vintage Haloid paper!) as well as my own, and Cem and I are meeting up tomorrow before it goes off to Les in the U.K.

One suggestion for all participants--If you are sending a print that is unmatted or unmounted, be sure to include a glassine or acetate sleeve or a parchment interleaving sheet to protect the surface of the print. If you use an envelope, it shouldn't have a metal clasp, which could scratch other prints in the portfolio or leave an indentation in the matte of the next print in the stack.
