Toning B&W Slides with Kala Namak

Here's how a single shot/layer looks like.
The uneven Depth Of Field (loss of focus off-center) is due to the curved field of focus or how's the correct term for such lens aberration/quality. The salt itself was flat, not arranged in any specific way.

Edge or corner softness - worse when lens wide open.

I like the fact that the tone of the slide is very close to the tone of the toning material itself.

It's a crop, so the effect is far more pronounced than shown - this lens doesn't suffer from edge sharpness loss much when used normally - Zuiko 50 1.4.
Reversed or with an extension tube - the story is different. You can see the curving of the focus when shooting say a macro texture plane at 45 degree angle, for example.

I find the tone matching the toner amusing too!

Never done reversed lens or extension tubes. I bought a macro lens a little while ago but yet to meaningfully utilize it. Thanks for the video link. Always good to brush up on the basics.

Had another go with Kentmere 400 pushed 2 stops and reversed in PQ Universal.
Left some frames untoned for comparison and this informs me: if I'll shoot K400 again (winter season, URBEX, night scenes), I'll definitely tone it - improved density being one of the key reasons. Now I'm interested how Delta 100 would perform.

I gave another shot at split toning. This time I used a Catechol based staining developer to complete the second development after the Kala Namak bath. Here are a couple of results with Kodak Double X film.
