It's been a while since I have worked on my GX680 Maki Hack collection. Yesterday I cut a larger hole in this Peco Jr recessed board, to fit this GX680 80mm lens. Putting it on my Maki Std, it is a closeup only lens, with dramatic wide angle perspective on the full 9x9cm format. Beautiful bokeh. I also have the 100mm setup this way, which will work for out to moderate closeups. I mean the lens is about a foot from the subject with the 80mm to be in focus. Worth havng this.

To finish the lens I will need a broken RB67 shutter which I usually get from broken 90mm or 127mm lenses. This is a Seiko shutter of the correct type that the GX680 cells front and back are properly spaced. I remove the shutter blades as I only need the barrel and the iris. Then put an f/stop scale on the perimeter of the board and she's done

Second Exposure. I yelled out " ONE TWO THREE" and got it just right this time Difficult to catch at the "decisive moment". SRT with mirror lockup engaged, 21mm Rokkor QH Eastman XX 5222 Minolta Yellow filter D23 1:1 This lens has replaced my 19mm Canon RF lens. I think I like it just as well.

A new addition for this rare lens, the Schneider original lenshood for the 150mm F2.8 Xenotar. This one has an automatic iris which couples with the Plaubel Auto Makiflex camera. This hood was expensive but I am glad I grabbed it, I have never seen one before! I think it really completes the lens.

My first test exposure with the Plaubel Makiflex. Schneider 150mm F2.8 Xenotar (wide-open at F2.8), Efke 100 6x9 sheet film, processed in ADOX Borax MQ (D76 type). Focus and shutter test. A success!

Plaubel advertised the Makinas as "the worlds smallest view camera". Using a Makina in some ways is like that in terms of use.

Unmarked Petzval type beautiful brass Projection Lens vintage late 1800's? Central stop removed, very swirly beautiful bokeh. I'd guess 200mm focal length, I wanted speed and I'd guess about F3.5 wide open. Sharpest in the center, central bouquets were focused on and are sharp! Depth of Field is near nil. Orwo NP22 9x12cm I bought in bulk from Bulgaria. Voigtlander Makiflex Plate Holder pretty good match. RADA made plates for Plaubel and were hooked up with them for a good while. These tend to light leak and I've retrapped a lot of plate holders, could maybe be improved? Yes. I also have some French and Russian Plate holders that seem to work as well.

Here I've quickly adapted the Arca Swiss 4x5 Reflex Magnifying Hood to the Automatic Makiflex. Hollywood Gaffer's Tape and razor blade (many layers) makes a semi-permanent installation.
I love it! No wonder Geoff Berliner at Penumbra modded his and sent me phone pix. What I like about is that it is uber high-eyepoint, there is a one inch wide black border around the 9x9 framing. All my other finders work better with 6x9cm. Geoff told me I am nuts to shoot 6x9 with this camera, square is it. It's rather unique in that aspect. Anyways I have a another of these finders coming from KEH, with the rubber eyecup For 9x9 shooting the groundglass grain is sharp to my eye and I always compose from the edges and move in. So this finder is wonderful to me and my square uses.

These are my shorter automatic iris lenses. On the camera the 150mm Maki Schneider barrel Symmar auto iris, in the center the 150mm Maki f4.5 Schneider Xenar auto iris. Then on the right, the 180mm Maki f4.5 Schneider Xenar auto iris. I have not used these shorter lenses much and am looking forward to this seasons work

Approximate View through new to me 4x5 Arca Swiss Reflex Finder on Auto Makiflex. As you can see there is a nice black border around the 9x9cm full frame glass. Perfect for viewing the entire field without straining

To shoot this image of Connell's Hardware sign, I was crushed up against the front glass window, in order to shoot at this obscure angle with tripod. The Fuji GX680 100mm F4 optics, transplanted into a recessed Plaubel Peco Jr lensboard, then onto the Plaubel Makiflex Standard body. Ilford FP4+ 6x9cm Makina rollfilm, processed in Legacy Mic-X straight and replenished. Scanned on an Epson 4490 scanner

The GX680 100mm F4 is a great lens on the Std Maki, but only for closer shooting, the rear group focuses to infinity, but unfortunately strikes the mirror, so the camera won't fire. But it works great for closer-in shooting and WOW it's wide on a Maki!

According to Plaubel back in the day, 125mm was as wide as you could go with Makiflex. Not so with modern Fuji optics

Looks awfully good. Another cool thing is that the eyepiece rotates so that you can look through the top, or rotate the eyepiece, and look through the back. Very nice. I'm gluing the rubber eyepiece on with some pliobond. Works good with my eyeglasses, I did trim it back a bit.

This is a 120 roll of slit and re-spooled 70mm Kodak Plus-X Aerographic Fim 2402. I purchased five rolls from "Nik N Trik" in the UK, so loaded it into a Plaubel Makina 6x9cm roll back. Shot with Plaubel Makiflex with 270mm f5.5 Schneider Tele-Xenar in barrel. Film loaded into System 5 Paterson Tank with two 70mm reels, plus room for a roll of 35mm. D23 1:1 twelve miniutes at 68F.

The are some VERY fine negatives. The tonality is among the best, having processed many different types of 120 B&W recently. In fact, I am buying more 2402 Aerographic. I just received four rolls, each 40 feet of 2402. Cost was $150 for 160 feet total, I'm OK with that. Into the deep freeze it will go.

Need to find time to do a lot of printing!

What's the exposure difference between the shots? All of the negs look very nice and printable! With the extented red sensitivity the film should be nice for landscapes with no need for an orange filter.

The difference is -one f/stop-. I agree either negative set should produce a great print I have taken to shooting dupes, these cameras and holders are slowly releasing dust which can stick to the film. Only way to correct this (besides Dyson sweepings before loading) is shooting duplicate frames.

I like this film so much, I have ordered a five inch by 350 foot roll. So I can shoot 4x5/9x12cm in the Makis, or with luck, 5x7/13x18 in my Sinar Normas

BTW that's 1060 4x5 negatives at an individual cost of 23 cents each. Happy Happy

Dan, If film is already slited to 120, why did you need 70mm reels? Typo?
How is quality of slitting? Any scratches, debris, etc on the negatives?
I was not aware that people are "commercially" slitting those films, beside Aerographic Infrared.
All those Aerial films produce fine negatives, I'm very happy with Double X #2405. I just need to use it more often.

Yep Nik N Trik was selling 120 rolls loaded with the 2402. And I would have processed them in my JOBO Multitank 5, I do eight rolls of 120 at a time in those. Agitation via Unicolor Uniroller. Nik N Trik's slitting/loading produced immaculate results. They are very good at it! https://ntphotoworks.com/
