Patio Blinds Pecoflex Swing Movement Test by Nokton48, on Flickr

Plaubel Makiflex with Pecoflex Adapter 240mm f4.5 chrome barrel Xenar Ilford 9x12cm Ortho+ Legacy Mic-X replenished 18 min tray 8x10 Arista #2 Multigrade dev 30 degree camera front swing to the right, the refocus as needed aligned the film plane to the patio blinds, which I thought were in interesting light. 2 1/2 minute exposure at f22. Learning to use the highly adjustable Pecoflex Attachment with homemade bag bellows. It is fun to figure out how all this old stuff really works on the job. Taken while I was feeling very incarcerated during the covid lockdown

[/url]Makiflex 180 F2.8 Zebra Sonnar FOMA by Nokton48, on Flickr

The zebra 180mm F2.8 CZJ Sonnar (uber hacked rear mount completely removed, refitted into Plaubel Peco Jr recessed board). Makiflex Standard FOMA 200 Mic-X. Lens will just cover, 18"x18" area is as far out as it will focus. Amazing Sonnar bokeh. This lens is a fave for Pentacon Six fans, this is pushing the envelope with larger format

I was attracted to the delicate lighting here

Four Makiflex Lenses One Lensboard by Nokton48, on Flickr

Four lenses I have had laying around in pieces, now reconfigured for Makiflex and attached to the Wista Tophat System available from an Ebay dealer in China. The Plaubel Peco Jr flat board has the Wista female mount attached, the tube combos simply screw together, so it's a very versatile system. I intend to line the interior of each tube set with flocking paper to cut down any interior reflections.

From the left, 250mm H5.8 Imagon, 240mm F9 G-Claron, 300mm f5.6 chrome Componon, and 300mm H5.8 Imagon. All fit the board on the far left. Each of these lenses focus from infinity to extreme close up using these configuration of tubes. The Componon is heavy the others are not..

250mm and 300mm Makiflex Imagons by Nokton48, on Flickr

Here's the 300mm Imagon shown just above on the Auto Makiflex. At 1/250 and 1/500 with high speed film this should be hand holdable. There's a Mamiya hacked stovepipe viewfinder, and a Graflex Graphmatic Makiflex Back on the camera.

Also this 250mm Imagon was in peices and laying around, so I dropped in into an appropriately sized flange, which was too big to screw in, and secured the lens to the flange with a copious amount of JB Weld. I'll touch is up with black Krylon flat enamel applied with a small brush, and it's done!

Both of these will get some use this upcoming shooting season

Maki #2 300 Comp HRU 125 at F5.6 by Nokton48, on Flickr

Shooting a couple of sheets of 4x5 HRU Fuji XRAY film. Auto Makiflex #2 300mm F5.6 chrome barrel Componon 1/125 at F5.6 in a light wind. Needed a fast shutter speed to stop Daisy movement.

Maki #2 300 Comp HRU 125 at F5.6 3 by Nokton48, on Flickr

View through Makiflex Auto #2 with 300mm F5.6 Componon chrome barrel at 1/125 wide open. The GX680 Porro Finder works good on the Makiflex. Higher eyepoint than this digishot, really. You can see the whole screen easily but you do have to have your eye at just the right angle to see all of it. BTW the handmade grids in the center are for the 35mm Plaubel Makina Back, which I happen to have. Perhaps I will experiment with some Eastman XX 5222 in the Makiflex and Makinas. Back in the days that was "miniature film". But a bit of fun because this camera is so marked to use it

159mm F2 B&L Super Cinephor Focus Test by Nokton48, on Flickr

Makiflex Standard, 159mm F2 Super Cinephor Theatrical Projection Lens, Graphmatic 4x5 film back, Ilford Ortho+ Commercial ASA 50. Mic-X developer processed by inspection in trays under deep red safelight. Aristo #2 8x10 psper dev in Multigrade dev.

This time the lens is SHARP right where it should be. So I will continue to use the Graphmatic backs, have four will maybe get a few more. They are super duper fast to use with my cameras.

My Portrait Lighting Downscaled 1 by Nokton48, on Flickr

My Portrait Lighting Downscaled 2 by Nokton48, on Flickr

This is my old portrait lighting scheme, scaled down as my giant softboxes will not work in this new space. Here this is the scaled down version, much more power for the larger format as an obvious upside.

I am looking at F32 or so very useable starting place for the larger format. I shot some tests on 70mm Rollei 400S, Plus-X original good stuff, and WL Surveillance film. Also through Plaubel Makiflex Kodak TMax100, in an earlier 6x6 Linhof Rollex back, and also TMX100 4x5 Kodak Readyload in a Polaroid 545 Back. Should be juicy in 9x9cm on 4x5 TMAX 100. Planning to process a lot of this in 1:1 Kodak D23 used one shot. Simply sulphite and Metol.

Used my Kern Arau 210mm F9 Apo-Repro for the Automatic Makiflex shoot.

My Portrait Lighting Downscaled 2 by Nokton48, on Flickr

25 years ago I studied Tim Kelly's lighting techniques. This is my 2021 retro version, scaled down quite a bit, no giant softboxes. But the same lighting principles apply just the same.

Here's the scheme.

A Broncolor Impact 21 strobe on full power, set at extreme camera left 90 degrees, providing an overall fill to the set and lighting the backround completely. The fill light modifier is a Broncolor Impaflex 60x60 softbox. Exposure measured incident F16 on full power. FILL F16

A Broncolor Impact 41 strobe on full power, set at 45 degrees camera left. Provides main light on the subject. The light modifier is a Broncolor Impaflex 60x60 softbox. Exposure measured incident F32 on full power. MAIN F32

A Broncolor Impact 21 strobe on full power camera camera light and up high. Impact reflector with Impact Grid. A tight circular pattern tightly aimed above the subject (no light on the subject) and creating a lighter background area to the upper right of the frame. Exposure on background measured incident F22 on full power. GRID SPOT F32

Finally a 36" round silver reflector just off camera right 45 degrees and "feathered"

Since we read left to right, this makes a "dark, light, dark, light" across the frame that I find attractive. What I'd like is something interesting to look at in every part of the frame.

Not there yet but it's a start. Exposed F32 4x5 TMAX100 Makiflex Automatic #2 210mm f6.8 Kern Apo Repro lens. Also shot some Ilford FP4+ 6x6cm Linhof Black Rollex film magazine. Man these early wind knob Rollex's are a good match for the Makis Sheet film developed in an 8x10 Unicolor Unidrum using one-shot D23 diluted 1:1 ten minutes at 72F on a Unicolor Uniroller.

Sts Makiflex w 180mm f5.5 barrel Schneider Tele Xenar in Dusrst IBSIO recess by Nokton48, on Flickr

Standard Makiflex gets a new lens today. Schneider Tele-Xenar 180mm F5.5 very hard to find this one is partial lens converted to barrel. F Stops not marked but can be taped to the front of the Peco Jr board. These old Durst recessed cones fit perfectly in the Maki Std interior, and are pretty deep as well. This one will focus out flat at fifteen feet. So it's another for closeups.

Today Makina 6x9cm back loaded with expired Panatomic-X which is usually good. Incident Autometer reads f5.6 at 1/60, so one at 1/60, also 1/30 and 1/15 which finished this roll. Tele-Xenar is fully open so F5.5 back in the day they shot wide open a lot with big cameras.

This lens sat around a while until I just figured out how to finally make it usuable. Looks great through the Maki. Star D tripod no cable release a bit windy

Automatic Makiflex 150 Xenotar by Nokton48, on Flickr

My first Handheld Makiflex Automatic image! I think a success. 150mm F2.8 Xenotar wide-open, Foma 200 6x9cm roll film Legacy Mic-X Replenished 1/125 wide open F2.8 I really dig the Xenotar Bokeh. In fact I always use this one wide-open.

Geoff Berliner told me he liked this one! Although he thinks I am nuts to shoot this camera 6x9cm.

Auto Maki no 2 150 2.8 Xenotar HRU 1 by Nokton48, on Flickr

Automatic Makiflex #2 150mm F2.8 Xenotar wide-open 1/15 Fuji 8x10 XRay HRU cut down to 4x5 in Graphmatic back StarD tripod. Development 12 minutes 60F straight Mic-X replenished by inspection of shadow values by deep red safelight. 8x10 Arista #2 RC Omega DII 180 Rodagon f22 35 seconds Omegalite diffusion head Multigrade developer

I only shoot the Makiflex Xenotar at F2.8 which is maximum aperture. This was the modus aperendi back in sixties, an era I call "The Golden Age of Photography". Shoot wide open handheld although that is hard to do inside with green XRay film. BTW these leaves are quite large elephant ears and this as as close as the Auto Makiflex would focus
