Lomography isn't drawing attention away from more serious pursuits of analog state-of-the-art
That's true because Lomography is just a bunch of products.
The market for such things went away years ago
That's silly. There's very little digital competition for any format larger than 35mm, and none at affordable prices. Even 35mm film is widely shot by street photographers in mono and colour, without gratuitous colour shifts.
If anything, they're helping to keep interest and enthusiasm in film alive one purple photo at a time.
They're keeping purple film alive, certainly. Nice if you like purple. Or you can turn the red and blue sliders up.

Which perverts the intent and corrupts the performance ( to paraphrase W.O. Bentley) of the absolutely superb film materials we have available. Lomography misrepresents the technology of both film and camera.

The appeal of Lomo cameras and film escapes me. Why would anyone deliberately try to take bad photos.

because maybe they aren't really bad photographs ?
on could also say " that person has all that great gear and all he does is film tests, or photograph his cat with a ball of yarn"
the film tests are what the person wants to do, and photographing his cat with a ball of yarn is what he wants to do
it isn't bad, it just isn't what you or someone else might be doing with the resources at hand.

Happy mistakes are embraced. If we then want to get rid of the happy mistakes and go pro we switch over to the dark side because it'll give us what we need without the fight.

couldn't agree more, but it isn't hard to get happy mistakes using a non-film based medium

Happily, the purple ooze is limited to Lomography's site. I'm safe at BandH ... wait... what? they sell it? Surely, I'm good over at Freestyle ... ahhh ... there, too! Adorama ... please adorama ... please adorama .... please adorama ... Gasp! sigh... It's probably infected all my serious film ... despair.

AHHHHHHH!

You can do film tests and photograph your cat with a ball of yarn with lomo cameras and film too.

Sure but I find film mistakes to be more pleasing. To be clear, my goal for most rolls is to get a perfect clear shot and develop as per manufactures standards. Stuff happens on the way to the bank though...

i know, and i am sure a lot of people do, and they get more interesting results than someone with a leica m6 and summa yaddayadda
exposing tmy2 processing the film in a nitrogen burst system and printing the results with a 4,00o maggablitz enlarger.

Cuz it's kool. And they're ignorant.
Social activity, not technological expertise.

its really kind of sad people have to insult others just because they don't like the / use the same camera or film.
lomo users expose film and a lot of it, and for a decade+ their film consumption has been a major reason
why film is still availble today.

Why do you have to lump all leica users into that basket. I thought you said:

" But if you want solid incorruptible consistent results why would you stick with film? "
Because film presents us with a physical image and with a modicum of care will last far longer than digital files. Film is 100% reliable and incredibly stable, static electricity can wipe out every digital file you have ever "captured".

you can insert any film camera you want, it doesn't really matter, it just can't be a lomo, holga &c
because people who use those cameras are ignorant :whistling::cry::sick:

Statement of fact, John, not an insult. Too bad it's an unpleasant fact, but there you are.

And thank you for editing my post to suit your reply.
(edit) Ah. I see you've "edited in" the complete post. Thanks.

You are yelling at the wrong person. I never said lomo camera owners were ignorant. That was another member.

Yes, the OP seems to enjoy posting links that promote controversy. I wonder does he live under a bridge and subsist upon goat?

how does someone's aesthetic decision make them ignorant?
that is like suggesting if someone
likes new brutalist architecture they are ignorant ...
just because you don't like new brutalist architecture ...

It doesn't. "Ignorant" means uninformed, unaware, lacking knowledge. I am ignorant of many things, but I am not ignorant of my ignorance. An aesthetic preference may denote poor or uneducated taste, but placing a value on defects in film, camera, etc. indicates ignorance of what that technology is capable of. Choosing, say, a meniscus lens to attain a certain "look" for an image is a valid decision and none of my business. Promoting lomography as a wonderful thing for film and film cameras is demonstrably false.
