I have most of the "GOM" on ignore. It made LFF much more pleasant. In all honesty once Frank Petronio got banned LFF just wasn't all that fun anymore so now I might drop in once a month. Gee I wonder if they are all a-twitter about Bieber's arrest.

Write me the check, but make it $4,000, I'll do all the work, I'll buy a Chamonix 8x10 and I'll even take the pictures for you!!

take as long as you need  by that point perhaps I'll already have an 8x10 so I'll use the money toward a 20x24 field camera

A drive failure taking down a site? Wtf... Are they doing hosting on a freaking Commodore 64? In this day and age that is lame.

The entire Large Format Photography site, including moderation and hosting, is a volunteer operation. Anyone reading or posting there is a guest of those funding/running it. Users obtain value an infinite number of times greater than what they pay for it, which is nothing.

Calling it lame is rude and inconsiderate. This has happened before and the volunteers purchased replacement hardware, then recovered virtually all of what was in the database. I think we can look forward to a similar outcome this time. I'd call that extraordinarily wonderful. Politeness and gratitude, especially to Brian Reid

who provides the server, are in order, not criticism.

I absolutely have to agree with Mr. Santamaura, and echo his response to Mr. Sawyer's pointed and rudely critical comment.

The Large Format Photography forum is generously provided by QT Luong, and moderated by a great group of VOLUNTEERS WHO GET PAID NOTHING for their work. Additionally, the servers and webhosting provided, and managed, by Mr. Reid are there at his expense.

So Mr. Sawyer, even though I respect your right to speak freely, I must take exception to your choosing to be so critical of such a great resource. I would invite you to set out on your own, and create such a forum.

That is if you feel you can do a better job, using the same resources.

Go ahead.

Show us how much better you can be at it.

I bet they had to shut down the database to find out who the person *really* is who sold that Chamonix F1 and was an utter jerk to those who replied to his ad.....:whistling:

Well... since I was banned from LFPI a couple years ago it doesn't make much difference to me. I suggest you don't disagree with a particular moderator there... no names.

Seriously?? I am constantly bewildered by how folks butt into a FS with random comments, etc. Seems very rude to me, even when well-mannered and well-intended.

I suppose it depends on one's point-of-view. I don't know what ad you're referring to but I've seen countless ads in which the seller is asking as much for a well-used item as the buyer would pay for a new one with full warranty. IMHO, it's incumbent on us, as forum members, to help protect unsuspecting noobs from getting the shaft by unscrupulous sellers. Again though... I have no idea what ad you folks are referring to. I'm just responding to the "mind your own business" mentality when it comes to keeping forum sales leaning toward the "honest and fair" side... at least within reason.

Not referring to any specific ad but a trend that has been in place for a while. Sorry to disagree, but "Wow, good price; I wish I could buy it but my car payment is due and I'm broke" is a useless contribution to someone's ad. As is "Nice stuff", as is "I once had one of those", as is "priced too high; you can get it for 10% less at www.shyster.com"... as is folks thinking they are the duly-appointed protector of the buyer population. Too many high horses and too little capitalistic freedom. I agree about complete situations where there may be a complete fraud being executed, but that is not generally the case.

But we'll maybe never see eye-to-eye on this one so... peace, out. Besides this is compeletely unrelated to the thread.

Okay. I saw people - 3,4 of them actually tell a seller she underpriced the item, and seller decided to not go through with the sale! So it wasn't just one way.
Also someone commenting on your ad is a free 'bump' and a useful thing for those just logging in - I find it weird for that to be even objectionable.

I mean, it is a forum, a good place to list without any comments would be a newsmedia ad or ebay, I guess!

Also, I have actually found out many good things about lenses and cameras that either seller wasn't aware of or forgot to mention.
Anyhow.

Btw, @pkm I'll have to login n check that chsmonix ad once it's back, up!

I've posted in ads with under-priced items. I told the seller I'll buy the item but asked if they're sure they want to sell at that price because they can get more for it. In those instances, I was the first to reply though so no one could have jumped in and taken advantage of another's lack of knowledge. I would have bought said items if the seller was sure they wanted to sell that low.

Too many high horses and too little capitalistic freedom.

Actually, the rule about not commenting on ads is a regulation--it *reduces* capitalistic freedom (which has as it core premise the free flow of market information).

I wonder why LFF goes down so much?

I agree and I'll add this: If one wants capitalistic freedom then go to eBay or one of the other websites dedicated solely to free market buying/selling. APUG and other forums are offering their classifieds sections as a "service" to their members. It seems to me the only members who would complain about the truth being told in these ads are those who missed an opportunity to take advantage of another forum member. Again, that type of free market behavior is appropriate for eBay et al but not necessarily in a friendly forum environment. We shouldn't be trying to cheat or take advantage of each other here. A friendly forum is not an eBay-type cutthroat dog-eat-dog environment. At least it shouldn't be.
