I finally got around to developing a roll of Kentmere 400. XTOL-R, 12 minutes in a Jobo.

Have you done any of your curves on Kentmere with Xtol? I followed the massive development chart and gave a 35mm roll 9:30 in a Jobo and I think it's underdeveloped.

Yes, 9:30 minutes may not enough. So far, I have been developing Kentmere 100 for 12 minutes and Kentmere 400 for 14:30 minutes at 20C in replenished XTOL to give me a CI of around 0.6. I have not finished the full test yet, but it's coming soon. I hope.

FWIW, I got the best results when exposing K-100 at 50 ASA and developing it in D-76 as if it was exposed at box speed.

That's great information, I have some 120 rolls of both and will try those times. Thanks!

Two more from Kentmere 400, developed in XTOL-R for 16 minutes. And my disclaimer: these are digitized with a smartphone, so the quality is terrible. Sorry about that! The first one is in a DIY cardboard film holder, the other in my 6x6 enlarger film holder, a much better solution.

Just an addition, which I think is important:
In my tests with Kentmere 100 and 400 in 135 format so far I've found that with several developers the "official box speed" is indeed very realistic.
Doing sensitometric tests and evaluating the characteristic curves of both films in different developers resulted in either getting box speed or only 1° DIN (1/3 stop) less light sensitivity. Only rarely (with few developers) a loss of 2° DIN (2/3 stop).
That is an excellent result compared to lots of other films, and especially compared to the other "low-budget competitors" Fomapan 100 and 400.

Best regards,
Henning

Indeed, these Kentmere films will give Fomapan a very harsh competition, considering that in B&H photo the Kentmere 100 in 120 is announced at a significantly lower price than Fomapan 100.

Yes, I found the same thing. Here are Fomapan 100, 200, and 400 summaries, compared to Kentmere 100 and 400. At least in terms of film speed, the Kentmere films are much close to the advertised "box speed" than their Fomapan counterparts. Having said that, the Foma films have a unique "character," which a lot of people, myself included, really like. One thing that kind of bugs me about the Kentmere films in 120 is that the base is just like the 35mm base, which has a higher B+F density than most 120 films and has a propensity for water drying marks. It's a minor gripe, though.

Both in stock ..... $1.85 USD more per 120 roll for Foma. I'll cast my roll film vote with Ilford.....given their typically better QC..... & for giving us new film stock.

I'm continuing to explore the properties of the new Kentmere 120 films, and I'm finding them excellent in every way. Today I explored the swampy woods near the house with Kentmere 400 loaded in the Medalist II, exposing it at 250 ASA and developing it in PMK (Pyro).
It exposes well, appearing to be very close to its box speed. It handles overexposure reasonably well (You can get usable negs with up to 2 stops overexposure), and retains excellent shadow detail when exposed correctly. It behaves beautifully when processed in PMK Pyro - I can barely see any grain in the images. (And the K-100 is even better!)

Sample image: (or see it big on Flickr)

Kentmere 120 is finally available 'somewhat' locally here on Vancover Island BC.
I'm on a darkroom supply run in the next week or so I will pick up some for tests on the incoming used Agfa Isolette.
Until then I'll stick with HP5.

This is a gorgeous photograph. Do you think Kenmere 100 in 120 is a reasonable modern replacement for Verichrome Pan? Or possibly Panatomic-X?

Thanks very much. And yes, I was just thinking today how it reminds me of Verichrome Pan!

Very excited to get to try some of this stuff, but the wait is interminable. Harman announced it back on December 1, but seem to be taking their sweet time to get it distributed. Still nothing at Freestyle or B&H, which you'd think would've been among the first places to get it in North America. Hoping to get it from Freestyle so I can combine with an order for more L110 developer.

Wonder what the holdup is?

B&H probably can't convince the US distributor (Roberts) to give them preferential pricing.
It may be something similar for Freestyle.
It would have been shipped by boat to Roberts, and they probably get batch shipments of their inventory, so that might factor in as well.
I've actually seen it on a store shelf at Beau Photo in Vancouver, so the Canadian distributor, Amplis, has had "their ship come home".

Hilarious if B&H is demanding preferential pricing, yet isn't listing it any cheaper than the broader market ($5.80/roll, which seems to be the going rate in the US). Must figure they'd rather have better margins on it than sell it at all.

Just chatted with someone at Freestyle. Apparently they do have it in stock - their IT folks just haven't updated the website yet. Told me to check back later today.

Their "free" shipping needs to come from somewhere.

Bought 10 rolls each of 100 and 400 Kentmere 120 from B&H the week after it was announced for $5.35 a roll.

Guess it all went fast!

I preordered some from B&H way back in December and received it a couple weeks later. Apparently, they're out of stock.

It's been in stock in Canada for over a month. I've had good results from the 400.

Perhaps one of the few times when Canadians have an easier time getting hold of stuff than Americans. Glad you're enjoying it!
