If you can find a MB-18 battery holder on ebay, you might want to pick it up. It allows the camera to run off 4 rechargable AA batteries, instead of the expensive lithium batteries. I wound up getting two n75s that had the MB-18 already attached that is why I have two of them. In fact one even came with a second spare battery insert.

The battery pack would also let one use an n75 with a broken or missing battery door.

Off topic: I have the Fisher 220 stereo receiver my dad had when I was a teen and a mint-shape Yamaha CR-1020 stereo receiver I bought years ago and have never used. Vintage audio equipment is a lot like old vintage cameras.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here is still shooting with this camera and can help troubleshoot?

I have multiple Nikon cameras, including an F100 and some Z cameras. I also have multiple film cameras including a Leica, so I am relativley proficient in most cameras.

My daughter recently bought an N75 as an upgrade from a point and shoot that she has been using for several years. It came with a 28mm Nikon lens (I think a D one). She is having trouble getting it to focus in low light. She's a college student, so primarily using it out parties, restaurants, etc. She knows how to shoot in manual mode if she thinks hard but I thought the N75 would be good for her since she can put it in auto and pop up the flash and use it as a "better" point and shoot than her Minolta Weathermatic.

I have a D700 and I can put up the popup flash, put the camera in auto and take a photo in a dark room no problem. I had assumed that the N75 would behave similarly, although since the camera is older I realize the AF might be slightly worse. But she can't get it to take a photo at all unless she is in a well lit area.

Is there some custom setting she should check for on her camera? She lives out of town at school so I am having a hard time helping her from a distance. I've looked through the manual online but not having the camera in front of me it's hard to suggest anything.

I really thought this would be an easy segue into a nicer camera for her, but it's proving to be very frustrating and she is considering returning the camera.

I will add she bought it from a reputable camera repair shop (Pro Camera in Charlottesville, VA) where it had been CLAed. The camera guy will take it back if she truly can't get it to work but I really feel like there must be some simple setting we are overlooking.

I have an N75 on my desk now with 24/2.8AFD lens. It is auto focusing fine at 1 sec f2.8 with iso 400 film.

Some cameras I have also have that feature , along with the option of disabling it .

It might be one of the CF settings has been set to "auto illumination" "OFF"

Or some such setting.

Thank you everyone. I do wonder if something is wrong with the AF Assist light. But I will also read through the custom settings options in the manual to see if there is something there that is set incorrectly.

I believe the lens she has is the 28mm f/2.8D lens, which should work well enough with the AF Assist to get the camera to take some kind of photo. She says a lot of the time she cannot get the focus confirmation sound to beep, so either the AF Assist is faulty or a setting is off somewhere. She also said that even if she manually opens the flash that it doesn't always go off, which I think it should, but I don't know definitively.

You've given me a couple of things to look into, so I appreciate it.

There is no infrared beam on the N75.

There is a white light auto focus illuminator. Function 12 turns it on and off.
