But I remember it was you that camera has to be sent in for CLA even if it has no problem???

Well that you do not remember correctly. I said with the Minolta I had CLAs done every year or two because I used it in cold weather.

The F75 is much lighter and smaller which makes it handier and more fun to take along.
I’ve owned both.

That´s exactly the point: I have the F55, F65, F75, F80, F80D, F100 and F6 from the latest AF series and all (!) are very capable cameras with different pros/cons. The F75 and F80 for me are the sweet spot of functionality and ergonomics vs. size and costs.

Advantage of the F75 is the (significantly) smaller size compared to the F80 and I also like very much the film running backwards - even in case you drop your camera or accidently open the backdoor this will secure your images. The F80 feels more like a quality product with better viewfinder etc., but this will not translate necessarily in better pictures. Advantages of the F100 and F6 are mostly of less relevance in times where we have to pay $20 or 20€ per roll of color film without development and having better digital models available. The F55 will not accept the newer VR lenses but runs smooth with the really good 28-80mm, which was one of the lenses used by Galen Rowell. I would not agree to call that lens a "bulky lens cap" as done by others in this thread....

I was introduced to the F75 by Mr. Racer - thank you very much, BTW.

The camera has a certain je ne sais pas - it's just true to itself.

Interestingly most all of the cameras up for ebay auction come with no lens or some crap off-brand zoom rather than the kit lens, or come with no lens at all. The few cameras with the kit 28-80 command much higher prices.

I've noticed this, too. A lot of Quantaray's or nothing.

I do not like the film being wound to the end when the camera is loaded. There is no override and none of my other cameras do it. It makes it harder to find negatives chronologically.

Those comments are from people who have not used that lens. It takes excellent pics. The optics are great, it is the build quality that is lighter weight. Like the F75!

Are there other lenses that pair particularly well with the N75 besides the 28-80mm and the 50mm f1.8? I have one of the ubiquitous Quantaray 28-200mm lenses, too, but haven't used it, yet.

I missed this response. Thanks for the link. I read all the posts. I've never seen a black N75. The black F75's seem to only be sold out of Japan. I'd like a black one, but they always go for more money than the silver ones.

I use the Nikon 20mm to 35mm AF zoom lens and the Tamron 28mm to 300mm AF zoom lens and have since 2004. Both are great to use for the camera.

How is such a short zoom range like 28mm - 30mm useful over a fixed focal length lens in that particular range?

I wouldn't hesitate to use my 35mm af-d or any of the af-d series on it. They are light weight and compact and suit the camera body for that, but buy you those extra stops over the kit lens.

I love that 35mm as a walking around/street view. Wider than normal but still pretty close to normal. But they made 20 24 35 50 etc... I just like the fast and small size combination with a camera like this.

Yes I had to look for a while to get the black ones at a reasonable price. Both of the black ones came with the databack and one came with a black 28-80. BTW that is a great lens. I use it as a 28mm mostly. At f4 it compares favorably with my 28/1.8G at f4.
If you do get one with the databack, it does go to 2023 and it runs off the camera's batteries.

Does the databack print in frame? Or between frames?

I prints in the frame. I do occasionally use it as it is a unique analog effect. Only a film camera can print the date like that. Digital cameras, of course, don't imprint with light on the sensor.

A few things I found out recently that scared me a camera was broken.

If the SB type flash is not screwed down, it won't show the "TTL MATRX" symbol. Only "TTL" and film speed won't be transmitted to the flash.

At the end of a roll the camera won't autofocus any more until the back is opened and film removed.

Corrected. Thank you. Here too. No Hello Kittys where injured or killed in this post.

I just took this little guy out for a shoot to finish the roll of Metropolis I had in it. What a joy to shoot! I know it's plastic, but it's fantastic.

There's not a thing it does wrong. It is just the right size, feathery light, the ergonomics are spot on, the shutter feels and sounds great, the film advance is fast and makes a nice sound, the 28-80mm zoom lens offers a great range and is super smooth, the AF is fast, and I like that when you load a roll of film in the camera it winds it all on the take-up spool. When the last frame is shot, there is just a short Bzzt sound as that last frame makes its way into the canister. Cool.

I cannot figure out why this Nikon N75 is so inexpensive on the used market, but I'm sure happy it is.

Are there any other cameras out there that make you smile?

They are great, typically underrated, cameras.Combined with a 50mm f/1.8, they are had to beat

I did say it was good. But don’t pay too much for it.
It’s one of the Ken Rockwell hyped lenses. I really like him, but whenever he raves about something it becomes canon (sic). It’s a good kit zoom, nothing more.

Yes, I'd heard that the lens is very good which, again, is a surprise given the cost.

How did you set the AE lock so it was the spot meter
6 AE-L Button 0: Auto Exposure Lock (default). 1: AE and AF lock. 2.: AF only when pressing this button.
7 Meter system in AE-L 0: Center-weighted (default). 1. Matrix. 2. Spot.

So this thread got me looking for the 28-80G again. I really liked mine but it was in silver, and attached to a silver F75 so I sold that off as a pair.
I wanted a black one for my F6. Super handy lens as so lightweight and great optics.

Found one on ebay for $30. Happened to be attached to an 'untested' N80 (black) which looks to be ok (no broken door, no dings/scratches) apart from being sticky.
Sticky is easy to fix. Whether it works is another thing - worst case scenario I got the lens and can sell off the back door for $30..

Pick taken with the silver 28-80 and F75 that I used to own:

A while back I compared my Zeiss 28/2 and Nikkor 28/1.8 and 28-80G on 28mm, all at f4.

I could not tell the edges apart. All just about equal. Based on that, and the poor review Ken Rockwell gave of the 28 AF-D, I use the "G" lenses any where I'd want the 28/2.8 AF-D and have never been let down with blurry corners.

In fact I have a 28-80G mounted on my F6 right now with an SB-28. That is a great combination since I like the vintage dark background/small aperture look; something not possible with an iPhone or low-power built-in flash on a digicam.

Nice write up of the design of this lens here explaining how they compromised on distortion to improve sharpness. That is a great compromise for my type of photography. Huss too, as the composition he presents obscures any distortion the lens might produce.
