A few highlights, very roughly - please bear in mind I ignore any background/context that might be obvious to other members:
  • Jake Seal is now Ferrania's majority shareholder.
  • Project Ferrania had started in 2017, an ambitious project that had, however 'lost momentum' - things are now 'restarting' thanks to the new shareholder
  • The company had 'spoken American English' before, in 1964, when Ferrania was purchased by 3M
  • Prior to Seals, the two Tuscan enterpreneurs Marco Pagni and Nicola Baldini had 'given new life to this market'
  • Pagni: 'why Ferrania? Because it's one of the few sites in the world where quality film can be still be manufactured, and there's availability of local technicians who are still the keepers of the old techniques and can restart production'
  • The project had kicked off in 2017; it was an ambitious, but complicated effort, because ideal working conditions are needed for this type of product: you work in complete darkness, at 21 degrees Celsius and 50% relative humidity
  • Over the years - also due to COVID - business didn't go quite as hoped, and production slowed down considerably - however, film is now experiencing a resurgence also driven by cinema, of which Seals is an expert
  • It's difficult to see what motivated Seal to invest in the region, but some details have leaked - he's a businessman and film producer, and had already invested in film in Europe (Inoviscoat and Filmotec) in order to produce cinema film under the 'Orwo' brand.
  • Seal and Francesco Legario, CEO of the technology park Ferrania is part of, have met - Legario is optimistic and stated Seal has really good ideas on how to move things forward.

If it's true, I'm glad they will make it to the other side of the river. I backed them for their machine rescue. I would love to see them coating again on P33 & P30. It doesn't have to be color film.

Good news?

Filmotec (manufacturer of ORWO UN54) and Inoviscoat are both insolvent and in liquidation.

Should FilmFerrania now face the same fate?

All three companies have been taken over by Jake Seal.

All good (bad) things come in threes.

Yeah that don't look good when the vultures descend. I wonder when the rescued machinery goes on the auction block.

As an amateur I shoot a lot of film but I can only support a few manufacturers. The last couple of years I have bought a lot of Kodak, Fomapan and Fuji with a small selection of Ilford.

I looked up Jake Seal and also found the reports of insolvency. I am not familiar with the ORWO story but it seemed a lot of people were trying to get product they had already paid for to no avail. Not a great sign

About one year ago it was said that Filmotec and Inoviscoat were declared insolvent to put both together to create a new company. Declaring insolvency was part of the plan and explained somewhere.

Or has now a new press release been made?

The third one was Tetenal.

I thought the same. As soon as I read that Jake Seal was involved, I thought, “Uh-oh, this isn’t good.”

My order for UN54 from the “ORWO Shop” was dispatched from Wolfen in 2022. I was informed that the number of employees in Wolfen had been radically reduced. Consequently, I ordered a larger quantity of UN54 in 2023 in order to be able to use this excellent material for at least a few more years. This delivery was made from Great Britain. It seems that J. S. took over the stock and sold what was still available. Today UN54 is only available in the “ORWO Shop” as a 1000ft roll. 100 ft rolls were available until 2022, 400 ft rolls until 2023.

Didnt Tetenal supply to Kodak? I was assuming that drama was resolved, as for ferrania, lets hope this means good news.

it was believed to be the German Kodak Suppler. Which is why many of the Kodak brand Chemicals are now from Photo systems (AKA Unicolor)

Well, it's been over 3 months since Mr. Seal took over Ferrania, and no PR. You'd think if everything was peachy, they'd be PR'ing all over the place...unless I've missed something.

I hate to say it, but it doesn't look good, does it?

Nope. It does not indeed. The rolls of 120 P30 and P33 getting more and more precious each passing day...

Maybe not totally...

This Italian shop has just (in the past week) listed P33 in stock, with a listed expiration date of July 2029, which would suggest that it's newly produced (I have stockpiled a significant amount of Ferrania since it started becoming scarce and haven't seen anything with an expiration date that late).

Additionally, it says in its description:
"Since this is a pilot production run for machine rebooting and setup, Ferrania warns of the possible presence of minor defects." (translated from Italian by AI)

"Rebooting" would be in keeping with them having made progress.

I'm not counting on anything. Shooting my Ferranias as miserly as before. But it does keep me from giving up hope entirely.

A new owner might sometimes do a press release early on, but as I said, it's really hard to actually work with a business full-force if you've just took ownership. You'd be surprised how long it generally takes to answer seemingly simple questions like "OK, how much cash does this business have," or "what are the monthly expenses?" Buying a business is really like buying a house that's full of closets, and at least one skeleton in each of them.
There's also the practical matter that this particular business is in Italy, so geographic distance and language likely play roles.

While I have little confidence in Mr. Seal based on his past track record, I am willing to give him time here. If, as he's suggested, someone from the previous incarnation of Film Ferrania was being less than honest with the funds....it will take time for the incoming owner to actually ascertain what he owns, how much it's worth and where any remaining funds are and if/when he can obtain them.

I have heard elsewhere that a small batch of P30 has been produced under the new ownership and is out there now being tested to ensure the quality of the film is up to the previous standards. *IF* this is true, then that is a positive sign.
