Thanks @moggi1964 .

@Klaus_H what is the main advantage of the stainless steel one over the plastic one in your experience? I am leaning towards the stainless steel because I expect that would last longer.

Hi,

as I own both versions of the professional release with ball brake, black and transparent stainless steel, too.
I have to say that the transparent one isn't as flexible as the black one.
So for general use I recommand the black or colored cables.

I had ordered the stainless steel version. I was disappointed, because it is not flexible enough. I returned it and replaced with the plastic version which is much better.

The stainless steel version is moisture-resistant and rust-proof. That’s why I always keep one of these cable releases in my car as a backup for the standard model I use most often, in case I damage or lose my regular cable release.

I have a drawer full of releases after all these years. The best one is the Minolta II like has already been suggested. The build quality is just a bit better in every way. Other good ones are the manufacturer ones, like Canon. I prefer the ones with the auto lock and not the screw lock but they all work. I haven't tried the German ones. Keep in mind that a good release may seem expensive but you only have to buy it once.

Thanks for your recommendation of Minolta cable release II! I bought a new old stock one, and it is indeed much better than all my existing cable releases. A quality that I'm willing to pay for!

Gebr. Schreck (mentioned above) allow you to order in red colour - hopefully not as easily lost as the black standard version in the evening (as I experienced...).
