Complete Guide to 70mm Film

Well, I got my 70mm x 15 ft spool printed. Bad news, it doesn’t work. It was too wide at first, and then I tried sanding down the middle part, and now it’s too small… gonna have to see if I can make an adjustment in CAD and figure out how to get it reprinted since I really don’t want to ask the guy as my school to reprint it (again…)

If you send me the STL, I might be able to give it a try. I have some 70mm, so I could at least trial fit.

Yeah I can send an STL. I might make a few adjustments to it.

Played around with this some more. Yes, it does work, and it does hold an entire 15’ roll of 70mm. But it is extremely finicky and I do not have any confidence I could load this in the dark.

Could you try making the inside film tracks undulating, starting with the current starting place as is and a mm or two reaches like a wave in an old fashion apron ribbon, so it'll hold the film in place but able to cope with various widths in general, without the need for such fickled precision?

Ilford has started their ULF for 2025, and I noticed they have 50-foot rolls of 70mm in either no-perf or double perf emulsion-in. Have to be manufactured in multiples of 15. I'm going to be looking for a place to buy a roll or two. @rhizomeblur Zach - any plans for Mercury to participate? I think, based on last year's ULF campaign, that the FPP will likely accept orders. Anyone else know of other retailers that might?

Freestyle photo does, for 70mm they only show for Ilford HP5+

I got a big roll of fresh 70mm film today! I’ll only be keeping 150’ of it, but still!

Also, I may have a lead on some frozen 70mm, both color and B&W. Mostly Portra 160NC, but also Vericolor III and Plus-X (type 2 perfed). There’s a lot there, so if anyone here wants a 50 or 100 ft roll, feel free to ask. I don’t have anything specific yet, very tentative at the moment, but I figured I’d let you guys know before I put it in the classifieds as 120/220.

If you get a good line on Portra, I'd be interested for sure. Thanks for posting!

Yeah, I’ll PM you.

So far it looks like 300’ of Portra, 100’ of VPSiii, and 1k’ of plus-X perfed is what I’d be able to get. From an huge film stash their father had, all been frozen. Trying to figure out what they want for all of it, but even without a bulk discount it’s a good deal.

So, I managed to snag a developing reel for 70mm, wasn’t planning on getting a metal one, but… it was a really nice deal. If I’m not mistaken, this is probably a Kinderman reel? If so, what size container am I looking at for development?

It looks like the one I have, which is Kindermann, but I can't be absolutely sure from your photo so take what I write here with several grains of salt. Mine fits nicely into a Jobo 3013 4x5 drum, so that's one option. The 3013's are old style "expert" drums, not as useful/nice as the later ones, so they were cheap at one point. (Maybe no longer? All Jobo stuff seems pricey now).

A small bucket and lid will also work, but you'll need to find one that's not translucent. The reel I bought some time ago came with a thick walled black bucket and lid that looks like something you'd put a plant in. It is a bit odd but it works.

Yeah… for the JOBO drum I’d be looking at $3-400, hard pass…

A bucket is what I had in mind, that’s actually what I designed the 3D printed reel for, a 1 gallon paint can… however from my understanding, this reel will be about 2 inches wider so won’t be able to fit in there. I don’t actually have the reel yet, otherwise I’d take measurements myself. Was told it should ship sometime next week.

I have the same type of 70mm reel as yours, and it is a Kindermann. There was a Ikea SS pot with lid that fits, but you have to do it in the dark. So if you find a good solution, I will be happy to know as well.

So far I’ve got 2 150 ft rolls of 70mm, and a couple 15 ft cassettes of film, so I’ll have plenty of film to process, lol. Here’s hoping I can find a way to process it!

Huh, that doesn’t actually seem like it would be that hard to 3D print? I think watertight prints, even ones with screw tops, are a pretty known thing now, would just be a matter of designing a light trap. Might be wrong though, who knows.

If it's not too late, I could at least 25 feet of the color stock. Terry, *********

Well, someone made a comment about not being able to get the big cassettes yesterday, and I suddenly had a brainwave. Made a super rough proof of concept to see if there was something there, and… yeah, I think there is. I’m honestly not sure what will come of it, but if something does happen, it might be very helpful for you guys. I might be able to rid of the need for the super expensive cassettes! I’ll keep poking at it to see if it’s actually a good idea and let you know.

I posted a reply about a 70mm reel I've designed, but someone removed it as being "commercial". I suppose it kind of was, but I didn't intend it to be taken that way. Anyway, I made a Paterson tank compatible 70mm reel that works pretty well and doesn't require investing in an entire 70mm ecosystem, which is really nice. Works great too!

You posted a link to your Etsy, that’s a big no-no.

And, it also only works with 120-size strips if I understand it correctly. So processing a whole 15’ roll is going to be extremely difficult, and you’ll loose a lot of frames.

That "someone" was the moderation team.
As mentioned off line, we have rules that require that if you wish to link to items that you are selling you are first required to become a paid subscriber.
That being said, the removed link that showed that listing was quite interesting. It and a couple of other instances of small scale product announcements from individuals has lead us to consider whether a forum for initial announcements of such products might be advisable.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but as 220 film will fit in a Paterson tank, would not 220 length 70mm film also fit - assuming that a reel is similar to a Paterson reel?
