Yes, pretty much like that! I have not thought much about the stopping mechanism yet, but there needs to be one. Maybe something similar than dog box gearbox, like how the teeth mesh together. Maybe use just one teeth pair similarly ground than the gearbox. It can have even a slight negative angle, so it stays tightly latched, but then the solenoid needs to be stronger to pull it out of engagement. Maybe the another tooth can be in a crank and another mounted to some lever with spring.
If the forces are a problem, could the stopping mechanism be in the ring part itself? that has a big diameter, so far less torque, than small diameter crank.
