Indeed. Re: The Future. Your guess is no better than mine but I'm really more involved with the final image than in how it's captured. I doubt I'll be bothering with film if/when it becomes an artisanal product. I suspect Kodak will be around for a bit.

ok maybe they are different. Im more concerned with look of grain. T-type grain (refined at smaller level) and classic grain (more groove), also ability to push ISO. I have used old apx400 and apx100 and find them indeed different as you said. They are hard to push over also.

So, this batch is slower and foggier.

How much cheaper will it be than the emulsion that will eventually be used, and what speed is it in the end? 200/24?

VERY different indeed...APX400 is (was) ISO250 at best but the grain is superb in my opinion, especially with Rodinal.

Might as well just pack up your stuff and go now then.

WRT to APX400, it's an entirely different film than TMY. APX has always been like that and that's why people like it.

Why? There's lots of Kodak b&w film available in my area, so no need to get excited about doomsday rescue operations. Not into survivalist anxiety about the future of film, either. Can't imagine why I'd bother with the "new" 120 APX400 when TMY-2 works so well. Shot any TMY-2 yet, clayne?

Any estimate as when the new APX400 will be available in 120 as I am running low on Fuji Neopan.
 
I hope Adox APX400 is better than AgfaPhoto APX 400...

I am finding that the "true" film speed of the "last gasp" AgfaPhoto-produced APX 400 is not ISO 400. This is based on testing of film that has been carefully refrigerated and stored. I cannot safely expose that film at EI 400 even when shot in flat light and developed in Ilford DD-X. That film also lacks sharpness and seems to require extended development time to reach "normal" contrast levels.

I do not believe this simply a case of the film being old because the base fog levels do not seem elevated.

In post #36, Mirko discussed film speed of the final product. Posts closely following that one covered developement. Bottom line: Rodinal 1+25 should require "average" times, while Rodinal 1+50 will be "long" like the final APX 400 batch, if not exactly the same time.

Yes, I read that; there was a reformulation of APX 400 in 2003.

But I have also heard that the AgfaPhoto (the very short-lived spinoff of the consumer film division which lasted only from late-2004 into mid-2005) batches of APX 400 did not perform as the data sheets accompanying the 2003 reformulation would indicate. The very last batches produced by AgfaPhoto seemed to have less contrast, film speed, and sharpness than the product produced from the introduction of the reformulated film until (maybe) late 2004.

I have heard varying stories as to the problems - even once hearing that AgfaPhoto's by-then-worn-out emulsion "kettle" had to be hastily repaired and adjustments made due to that.

The results of my own experience with rolls from the very last batch of AgfaPhoto APX 400 is here: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

I am certainly open to purchasing the ADOX APX 400, but it will need to perform a great deal better than that last batch.
 
It seems like the test run Adox Pan 400 has gone from the Fotoimpex site. Is the "real" film coming?

It is Feb. 2011. When will Adox Pan 400 be available in the US? I have not been able to find it.

I asked the folks at Freestyle, and they say that the test batch did not perform as well as hoped. So there is more work to be done, and that research is in progress.

This was just last week when I asked, but I do not know when they got word.

To the credit of ADOX there is not going to be a release of substandard film.

I guess waiting for it to be good is better than rushing it and being bad.
 
Actually, I think they did sell the substandard film for a reduced price through a Europen Website. The man from Adox who posts here had a thread about it at some point...or was it at the beginning of this thread?
 
No, they didn't. It wasn't a criticism of them; just pointing out that the bad batch Freestyle told you about had been mentioned by Adox.
 
I'm sure this first batch was also available in the UK a few months' ago but I can't see it anywhere now. Must have sold out. From what I read the main issue was speed and this batch wasn't a true 400 speed which is supposedly the aim.

It was sold by Ag Photographic of Birmingham. They pointed out that it was below the notional ISO 400 speed. It is no longer listed so presumably sold out, or was withdrawn. The site now says they "are hoping this film will be available from late spring 2011". In view of what is reported above, it is probably going to be later than that.:sad:
 
First started black and white with APX 400, I can't wait try it out in 120 format.
 
A good friend of mine fixed me up with ten rolls of Agfa APX 400 that expires this month, and I have been enjoying the re-discovery of this fine film.

I have tried it in Xtol, which is my main developer, and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't really until I used it with some good old Rodinal at 1+25, and agitate every 30s, like Agfa suggests, that it really came 'alive'. The prints are absolutely beautiful, and if ADOX can get the same quality as the old Agfa, then it'll be a really great all purpose medium to high speed emulsion for enthusiastic photographers!
Surprisingly, a 9x12" print from the 35mm Rodinal treated negatives are very crisp, decently sharp, and exhibit really tight, sharp, and unobtrusive grain, on par with Tri-X and HP5, but with slightly lower film speed. A very fine film.

Just asking if there's any update on the research. Hope ADOX is experiencing some success.

I was moving things in the freezer and I found my last few rolls that I'm hoarding like the last bottle of a fine wine. Have to wait for a good steak to appear to justify using them.
