Because there are so many variations of the holders I've measured & photographed what I currently own. It would be useful if anyone can add further variations and also the cameras they fit.

These two fit a Rodenstock 9x12 and an Orion Werks 9x12

9x12 Plate holders 3

The first will fit the Rodenstock or Orion Werks 9x12's but is longer than normal.
The details show why the second one won't fit.

plates4a_sm.jpg

details
plates4b_sm.jpg

First: Width 100mm, length 1145mm
note the long locating lip at the top

Second: Width 100mm, lenght 139
note the long locating lip at the top, this prevents it's use in the Rodenstock & Orion Werks as it won't slide in afr enough and leaves a large gap at the bottom.

9x12 Plate holders 4

These will fit an early Linhof, and have no thin edge strip.

plates3a_sm.jpg

Width: 100mm Length: 141mm

It would be useful if anyone else can add further information, particularly what types each camera will accept as finding the correct 9x12 holders can be quite difficult.

I'll try to find time to check dimensions when I get home, but I believe your first group are what was called "Normalfalz" and would also fit Voigtlaender, some or all Ica and Ihagee, at least the Nagel Kodaks, and a lot of oddball cameras (house brands and such).

Thanks for starting the ball rolling on this; it's a really valuable body of information and hitherto doesn't seem to have been available anywhere.

Roll film holders

Here's a couple of 9x12 fit Rollex roll film holders, nominally 6x9, both give a frame size of 56mm x85mm with slightly rounded corners.

rollfilma_sm.jpg

Edge details
rollfilmb_sm.jpg

The left hand Rollex fits the Rodenstock & Orionwerks cameras, the edge details shown here are similar to the plate holders.

The right hand Rollex fits an early 9x12 Linhof.
Width of holders: 99mm (100mm Linhof fit) Length 150mm

Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a couple of addenda, without pictures yet.

Voigtlaender 9x12 holders (no identifying number; I suspect all Voigtlaenders are the same): width 97 mm, length 147 mm, locating lip 7 mm (measured at the edge of the holder). I can personally confirm that these fit a Voigtlaender Bergheil and Avus, a Nagel Fornidar 30, and a Photo-Porst house-brand camera that I think was made by Orionwerk.

Kodak 9x12 film/plate holder (no model number; they say "Patent U.S.A. 1,933,823"): width 97 mm, length 148 mm, locating lip 6 mm (at edge). Double flange with the groove in between (I'll post a picture); they fit the same cameras as above.

Hello Ian:I noticed your thread regarding various plate holders and I would like to add this item. The ground glass back for my Goerz "Mystery Camera" is as follows:the lip is 3 mm, the length (from top to bottom) is 144 mm, the width (from outer edge to outer edge) is 108 mm and it is 3 mm thick.Any ideas as to what holders will fit ?.

Thanks,

Doug:wink:

Doug, the width of the focus screen back is deceptive because it's usually wider than the plate holders, often overlapping slot is. the guides that take the holders.

You need to see how thick the guide slots are, I don't have a micrometer but the Linhof fit Rollex is approx 3.5mm thick at the edges. It sounds like they might fot your Goerz.

Thanks, Ian. This is really useful. I've occasionally thought of getting one of these cameras, because they seem so compact, but the filmholder issue always puts me off.

I was at an antique shop yesterday and they had a stack (8?) of grey-backed, single sided Kodak 9x12 film holders. They looked pretty clean. If anyone's interested, PM me. I'll need to see what people are willing to pay for them before I go back ONCE to either get them or not if he wants too much $.

My (Currently only) Voigtländer holder marked "Voigtländer" is 151mm long and 101mm wide. Some more holders arrived today but thanks to this thread I identified them as Linhof holders, 141X101mm. Hmm So it seems I have 1 working holder and 4 extra sheaths. Talk about making every shot count
Kind regards

Hang on in Søren, it's a real painful process finding the correct fit because most sellers don't know how to identify them properly. Those Linhof type holders also fit some Zeiss cameras.

Yeah but now I'm in doubt. I just found an Inscription on the pouch saying ICA AktGes. Dresden. But then again that just proves the pouch is an ICA.

Edit. Looking at the pics of the Linhof holder I noticed they don't have that "edge" the others have on the side so I'm not sure if mine are not ICA instead.
Kind regards

Greetings,

If you post any info you have then we can begin something more meaningful.

Søren, it may well be that I have a roll film back & some holders that will fit your Voigtländer, let me know what size does fit.

With or without a lip ? I only have one long plate holder, I'll check it when I'm in the UK.

I am looking into having some meta inserts made as they are very simple to make.

I have a 9x12 Bergheil that came with four plate holders. There are some slight cosmetic differences in the backs but they all fit. As already stated the basic dimensions are 100 x 150 with a 7mm locating lip. The locating lip measurements are indicated by the blue lines I added to the photos. One of the holders came with a reducing insert to hold 6.5x9cm plates. That will come in handy as I have plenty of plates in that size. I don't have any 9x12 film inserts however & I'd really like to get some as I have film that I can't shoot because of this. I've nothing to trade but I do have money.
I've also included a detail of the top corner of the camera back to show the cutaway that the locating lip has to fit with. Best advice I read when first researching plate cameras was to buy one that comes with holders that fit the camera. Unless you already have a good collection of holders it can be difficult to get the right ones. Thanks to Ole for that tip.
