I like to use bounce flash outside at night. I like to use a far away object so the light is diffuse. The moon works best.

I like to use bounce flash outside at night. I like to use a far away object so the light is diffuse. The moon works best.

Once there is no object to bounce off, there is no chance of hard drop shadows. Just get the flash off to the side (or up).
It’s still hard light, but it doesn’t look like flash. It just looks like outside light.
Put a filter on it if you are shooting colour.

I usually prefer bounce flash or diffuse flash when possible.
