Miles, you shouldn't get that artifact at all. I scan pyro negs all the time and don't see it. Maybe you have ICE turned on? Offhand I suspect that is the issue, because the artifacts are in the thickest portions of your negs and where the tone gradients are largest. ICE won't work properly...
That's an interesting image, great texture.
Unfortunately, there are colour artifacts that almost give that (gasp!) digital selective-colour look. Let me suggest a rescan.
Q.G., 2F/2F, I assume that you are both familiar with the visual music genre; there are quite a few contributors to that and some of your ideas are likely implemented there.
decolorante, it sounds like what afflicts you is the photographer's version of "writer's block." It is quite common among anybody who puts thought into their photography, as opposed to machine-gunning everything they see.
First of all, accept that inspiration will come back to you when the...
I've made prints with it in the darkroom, it's not that hard.
My problem with it is that it isn't very sharp, it isn't available in larger formats, and... b&w dev is a little bit easier than c41 so if I want a b&w image....
(Not that c41 developing is hard, but it's not as silly-easy as b&w.)
IT people may simply be more comfortable with forum-based communication and hence may be slightly over-represented on forums like APUG.
In the world beyond forums, I have a diverse set of friends from all walks of life who shoot film, I don't see any clear trends. It's a fairly even split...
QG/2F/2F, let me humbly suggest starting a new thread on this analogy. I think it is interesting but... it's becoming increasingly difficult to make sense of this thread.
Anyway I think you guys are going about it the wrong way, the real issues are continuity of tone and gamut ;)
Also anyway...
Yes, I agree with this statement about art, broadly defined. But again... isn't it at least a wee bit ironic that the artistic medium most capable of rendering detail (photography) is often not used for that purpose?
N.b. I am not saying that sharpness is necessary for an effective print or...
Agreed.
Of course, it's useful to hear critique, and we all should be willing to listen when people take the time to review our work, but... frankly, if somebody told me an image is too busy because of my choice of DOF, I really don't think I'd take it seriously. I have heard that, and I...
Yeah, agreed. And I think the point is that as a matter of perception, our eyes don't really see "prints" at all. The eyes see individual components of a scene and then integrate them into scenes (as just restated by Andy). Hence most people don't perceive out-of-focus regions at all, after...
Actually, I wasn't referring to perspective (although that is also interesting). What I meant is that our eyes refocus so quickly, and our brains put together the separate images so quickly that we usually don't see in-focus / out-of-focus separations with our eyes. E.g. I only see a small...
Oh, good luck trying to find any consistency in what I shoot! But it's true that I do tend to aim for large amounts of detail. What I usually aim for, though, is an uncluttered, geometrically simple composition. There is detail and then there is clutter; these are two very different things...
That can certainly happen. I understand. But it's more an issue of composition than sharpness, right? Some compositions call for lots of detail, some do not. Certainly many (most?) of us who went from 35mm to MF to LF went through a period of just being drunk on detail... and forgetting how...
I think I said most of what I wanted to say way back in post #10.
But I will just offer one additional comment about detail. One of the aspects I most enjoy about photography is the recording of lots of detail. Photography can record even more detail than I was able to see, when I composed...
Because it is probably the one thing that can be easily quantified in photography. It can be measured, directly, using methods with which most people agree. Some would say that you can even ascribe a price to it.
People generally won't agree on how to quantify tonality, bokeh, etc. Not to...
No, I had the newest rb 50 (given the small price difference, it's never made sense to me to invest in older rb lenses). And I don't think it was an issue of a bad copy, the rb 50 and the 50 uld are quite different designs. The rb 50 is not a low dispersion lens.
By the way, when I had the rb...
I did not care for the rb 50 it is the only rb lens that I didn't get along with. It is not nearly as well corrected as the rz 50 uld version. (On the other hand, the uld is pricey!) I bought an rz for two reasons: the 50 uld and the 110/2.8.
I do like the rb 65 KL very much, it is superb...
I have several of the type J cut film sheet holders for the rb. They are a bit heavy and take a bit of practice to load, but they work well. They have inserts for 3.25" sheet film, which I like sometimes. And if you take the inserts out, you can shoot to glass plates (which I do too).
Here...
Can you scale focus?
For night focusing with the rb67 (with which scale focusing is a bit difficult*), I have put a flashlight at the point of focus, aimed toward the camera. That works well enough but of course it isn't always practical.
*Note to interested rb/rz users: there is only one...
Do avail yourself of a nikkor 4T closeup adapter for use with that 120. Trust me on this. Normally I would not suggets a diopter but... it is very well suited for LF and the 120 in particular.
And... nice shot!
For some time I have been thinking about incorporating a tripod into the stem of a bike, using the bike itself as a tripod. So you would tilt the seat or take it off and pull the stem up and voila, bikepod.
