Would Kodak Sell Film Division?

My experience is that everything is for sale.
Make Kodak an offer, you might be surprised how low they will accept.

It isn't a matter of what Kodak would accept; it's now a matter of what the note holders after their convertible debt offering of this past summer would accept.

I think one of the greatest obstacles to EK ever selling off the film division would be the difficulty in precisely assessing what the environmental cleanup liabilities could be at some point in time.

No doubt about it, Kodak has been the "worst offender" among companies that have not ceased operation, entirely.

But the discontinuation of Presto 400 (Neopan 400) in 120 was as shocking as it was unwelcome.

Ilford - replacements for some discontinued Kentmere papers and they are working on a Lith paper oh and Kodak

Kodak does sell motion picture film and they sell lots of it. It brings them in a good profit. Most of the motion pictures are still shot on film.

Which, although childlike in its petulance, is fine so long as you don't simultaneously take up the cudgel to bash Kodak for not "supporting" film photography.

i can see that ...
knowing how long it takes to run through a 100 reel of 16mm film
and how much it costs.

Bingo. Kodak is still at least very concerned about the issue and is still listening.

I feel that the more pertinent question should be (and I do not intend to make this a political discussion in any manner so that is why I say this very generically and without any intent of offending anyone) "When are we going to start focusing on the economy and employment so people can have some disposable income to purchase film?" And this is as much of a concern in Europe as it is stateside. Surely you have noticed the numerous photography For Sale items being posted here and other places that are being disposed of for cash flow concerns. Really sad. Film is considered a non discretionary purchase so the future of film sales and the status of the industry is directly affixed to these real life issues.

Much of the negativity comes via ineptitude from Kodak's own marketing & sales.

It's a two edges sword, on our side is the Film Division who need us as much as we need them.

On the other is a marketing/sles department trying to Re-Invent Kodak as something else, and then a Distribution system that's not fully functional.

I used Kodak Tmax films from their release,but I haven't seen any on a shelf in 4/5 years when I've gone to buy film.

Yes I use the internet to buy most of my film, but if outside the UK I need to buy from where ever I can if I suddenly begin run short. and I just haven't found any Tmax or any other Kodak B&W films on retailers shelves, but Ilford film is everywhere and so surprisngly is Foma. This is the same on three different continents too ! As a consequence I've switched back to Ilford films, & I'm happy with the results.

I'd like Kodak to begin to participate fully on APUG, I think Scott DiSabato would be more than able to fend off anti Kodak posts, but I think he (or someone else) needs to hear legitimate issues and problems and relay them to the relevant people in the company.

Oh, I don't know. Some people just like to complain. Some just hate big companies. Some hate others success. Some comments that criticize make sense, other are rather silly. JHMO

Quite simply, if Kodak (EK) dropped or sold their film division, then 1/3 of their revenues would disappear. Do that, and the share prices of the stock would drop, most likely resulting in their delisting. Without some other form of revenue to generate what film product generate, Kodak might no longer be a viable company. Anyone who reads the financial filings (SEC) of Kodak can easily see that.

I hope they stay in (the film) business for a very long time but, if it came to it, it would be the answer to my prayers if they would sell it. Unfortunatly I don't believe they (or any of the others) would. It's hard to believe that film has been around for so very long and yet we all rely heavily on just a handful of manufacturers (meaning, you'd think something that's been around so long would not be so difficult to replicate by now). If it comes to the point that film is totally unprofitable to the big guys, then surely some small guys (with lower financial expectations/needs) could step in but that could only happen if they could acquire the knowledge from the existing sources. The existing sources refusing to let go of it, even though they no longer deem it usable, is what I am afraid will be the end of it.
