A couple of concerns about that statement:

(1) did you learn that through statistical analysis? Where are these people? Point them out.

(2) why would you care? Does it have something to do with you and your liking of photography? Did they tease you?

People like to do things they consider "cool" - even if they suck at them. And people like to get the "best" things - even if they can't really use them. Most people don't need an audience for such actions. They are capable of doing them all on their own.

And - really - slinging an M6 around your neck is boasting to who? All those people who don't know what it is?

The color chemistry will go bad before I shoot enough film to use it all. It is cheaper to send out the film and get a set of prints that waste the color processing and then doing my printing for one roll of film.

Actually it doesn't. My current 1 litre in use bottles are 5 months old and going strong.

My remaining unopened mixed 1.5 litres (from a 2.5 litre kit) will be fine when I open them in the next couple of weeks and I expect they will last another 6 months.

I guess that sometime, somewhere in the past, someone a bad experience with bad developer and ended up with a blank roll of film.

It happened to me once maybe 20 years ago and since then I check dev activity once the developer is over 4-5 months old.

Stored correctly, they seem to last (for me at least) long enough to get 30 rolls out of a 2.5 litre kit. So about $2 a roll which is more convenient than $10 develop only at a lab.

There's a plethora of information about how to stretch C41 chemistry in a technically sound and economical way. Since that has been discussed in so many threads already, perhaps let's focus here on (constructive) discussion about the motives for shooting color film in a hybrid process.

I am planning to develop in batches of 8. It would take me a long time to accumulate 16 rolls. I got 7 rolls done and waiting in line in the fridge, and the 8th roll is in my camera right now.
