... The all black newer FD 50mm 1.8 lens I added did not seem to want to meter properly apperture-wise. I took a silver backed (older) lens off my Canon TX and metering worked fine. Anyone else have this issue or is it par for the course? ...

Beautiful camera and lens.

My FTb with 50/1.8 (post #1358) meters about one stop too high (which would result in underexposure) - but I believe that's because I'm using a 1.5v PX625 instead of the 1.35v supplied by the no longer available mercury PX13.

Some people choose to compensate by adjusting the ISO; others buy an adaptor for use with a different 1.3v battery.

The PX625 A 1.5V battery is a Alkaline battery and beside the voltage difference Alkaline doesn't have the correct discharge characteristics over it's service life producing inconsistent exposures as it ages..

Zenit 12XP with Helios-44M-S 58mm 1:2. No battery cover but it was 2.99$.
Went through a roll and we'll see how it performed. Developing tonight!

So help me, I could not resist. Immaculate Canon FTb body arrived today. It is strange that The all black newer FD 50mm 1.8 lens I added did not seem to want to meter properly apperture-wise. I took a silver backed (older) lens off my Canon TX and metering worked fine. Anyone else have this issue or is it par for the course?

I've had situations occur to me where my FD camera didn't properly engage the metering levers at the rear of the lens, which resulted in it not responding right. Usually dismounting and carefully remounting the lens will take care of the problem. It's worth noting that, with the FTb (great looking example, by the way!), the aperture must be moved off the "A" setting for the lens to mount, but you probably already know this.

As for batteries, I use 675 hearing aid batteries -- 1.4v which is plenty close enough to the original. Plus the zinc-air technology results in a discharge profile that is almost identical to that of the original PX625. The 675 hearing aid batteries are smaller in diameter, but this doesn't matter with the FTb since it has a spring loaded cap for the battery compartment. The spring keeps the battery centered. Lastly, the 675 hearing aid battery is MUCH cheaper than the Wein zinc air offering. You can buy a pack of six for the price of one Wein. If you have a Costco card, you can buy a bubble packed card of 48 for less than $10. A no-brainer for me.

Good to know this - thanks.

Just arrived in the Mail today is a Speed Graphic 45. $150 on EB. This thing on the outside looked like hell. 5 hours later, I have taken it apart, cleaned it, and for now it's ready for some test shots. Soon I will rebuild the shutter. I have 2 here to do. Should be a lot more fun than hauling around my 30 pound Cambo SCX... So that is my new toy today. Cant wait to shoot some tomorrow.
:D
Greg.

A beautiful condition NOBA 5X7 studio camera, with stand, several backs and accessories. Fully functional and great conversation piece in the living room. I think my bride is warming up to the idea but then one never really knows . . . Bill Barber

I wish you household peace and happy photo taking. I don't understand how we put up with the guest towels never being touched because they are decoration vs a functional camera in the living room. I will never understand my wife's mind.

A Yashica Penta J with a stunning Petri Orrikor CC Kuribayashi 50mm f2 lens... A camera built like a tank and breathtakingly sharp little lens.

This rather fine Pentax Super A combo "fell" into my lap not so long ago. I really need to stop buying before I really begin!
