I agree with you on all counts. What I'm trying to say is that, let's say, Nikon FE and EM. One is more robust than the other. Or Olympus OM-1 and OM-10. Latter feels a tad flimsy. Same with X-xxx. X-700 looks fine, the paint never comes off, it can look great for the decades, but it's plasticky. So is X-300 (Aka 370). I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw SRT-101, it stands so much higher than others... Heck, even Maxxum 9000 feels sturdier than X-700.
I won't say that any of those cameras are bad, because they aren't. In fact X-700 is a dream cam for some thanks to PAM, X-570 offers the same sans Program mode and if one wishes to taste majestic Rokkor glass without spending too much, there's always X-370. All three are rather popular in my country, much more than Nikon FM, FE, FG, almost as much venerated as Canon AE-1.
It seems to me that some people made a lot of bad decisions in Minolta management, because if you're as innovative as that brand, you gotta try too hard to perish like they did.

There are so many great minoltas. Alas, I already have complete Canon FD, EF, Nikon and Pentax systems, so trying minolta would be tol much.
Well, whatever you do, DON'T google the SR-2 or the SR-7 and definitely DO NOT click on links such as these:
https://www.cameraquest.com/minsr2.htm

I never had a 700, but i do have the 570...and THAT camera is why i am selling (trying to) my Canon A-1 and AE1-P.X-700, like every other three digit X Minoltas feel cheaper than any SRT. Cheaper than most of their peers from other brands as well. And that is considering that X-700 was last (and supposedly the best) manual focus Minolta for mass market. Not good enough, I guess.
I'm glad you like it that muchI never had a 700, but i do have the 570...and THAT camera is why i am selling (trying to) my Canon A-1 and AE1-P.
I have (probably) shot the A-1 more than any other camera. It works fine, takes just as good a picture as anything else....it's juts that i prefer the way the 570 functions.I'm glad you like it that much

Other than a CLA a few years back, the A-1 has worked flawlessly. The AE1-P is also a quality camera. I have too many, so something has to go. The A-Series are going for pennies these day. Somebody will get a good deal when they buy mine.....

There are 5 on Amazon UK, don't know if they'll post to the usa. £55.Oh sweet Jesus! I have to have one!!
(I am not joking - I want one of these)
.
I use the European equivalent X-570 (which was the last MF minolta, being introduced after the X-700) and i too find it an exceptional camera.I never had a 700, but i do have the 570...and THAT camera is why i am selling (trying to) my Canon A-1 and AE1-P.

Ensign 820 special
The Werra 5 turned up. Nothing online mentioned the adjustable dioptre on the viewfinder.
The circular viewfinder unscrews a little, when it's tight the image is blurry (I'm shortsighted), unscrewed a bit it's sharp, then gets blurry again as it unscrews further. Then stops unscrewing any further so I don't think I'm trying to remove it.Interesting !!!
That would make it the first still camera that got such!
(Or does anyone know better? By then cine cameras already got such.)
I got the the first model Werra. Designwise the most interesting as least cluttered.
But its finder is just shit.

I have several ensigns.all with te Xpress lens, and all are very sharp, as with any folder, the trick is to stop down to at least 8,to 16, which with the Xpress lens is the optimum working apertures, with 11 being the best, I must have 6 cameras with this lens and, like the Tessar Skoper Ect they need stopping down to get the best out of them,I had the standard 820 with the Ross Xpres. Excellent build quality, however I couldn't make the lens be critically sharp consistently. I tried re-aligning the focus scale with regard to the true focus plane, but I could never have good success. It might be due to lack of film flatness or film plane consistency.
