What's your latest new old camera ? (Part 2)

It seems I got me a Mamiya Sekor 65 mm lens + case for my C330f and a working Yashica D, with only the leather missing on the front. Maybe I can get a new leatherette set for this camera. Both together bought for $70 including shipping.

A few Kodak Bantams (hey, 828 is 35mm). They are so good I've put together a respooling station; when I just had the Bantam Special it wasn't worth it. If you want something cheap that will blow you away with optical quality, remember these 3 words: Kodak Anastigmat Special.

Just received a Canon F-1n (that's the second version) in great shape. I think this is one of the best manual focus cameras that Canon ever produced. I'm looking forward to shooting some Ektar 100 soon. Also bought an Olympus XA w/ A11 flash at a recent camera show. It appears to be fully functional, but needs a foam replacement. I have a Jon Goodman kit for that purpose and a weekend project. ronwhit

Above should read:

Enjoy your Canon!! It has that "je ne sais quoi" that the Nikon F also has. It makes you pick it up and use it instead of other cameras that have more bells & whistles.

My latest purchase has also been a F-1n in the spring. My local second hand camera shop is trying to get me to bite on a mint Rollei 35s in the box.

I've owned one, the germany-made original Rollei 35, and i will have to tell you that i sold it, having used better compact picture takers:

- The minox 35
- The Olympus Pen S3.5
- and the Voigtlander VF101

The Rollei 35 is too heavy for some pockets, and too slow in operation. The Minox 35 is the better machine if you want to actually use the camera and carry it around.

Congrats on the F-1n; i currently have one F-1 and two F-1N. I love them.

I'm not sure on the Rollei. My GAS attack says sure why not, but I need another 35mm camera like I need a hole in my head. 5 that I have now is somewhere near enough.

The Rollei is a fabulous camera, IMO. The Minoxes I've tried have all failed. Same as Olympus XA's.

Mixed results here,

I had a Rollei B when it came out, the lower range model, but it was nothing but trouble, the retractable lens kept jamming and it was not true in the mount meaning you could wobble the lens about. They seem to go for silly money on Ebay.

Never had a Minox, my hands are possibly too big, but I've read they can be troublesome.

I've fancied one of the XA range, not the XA as it needs to be as simple as possible,just point and shoot, so I've picked up the most basic model XA1 very cheap, I know it has limitations, but I'll give the underdog a chance.

It does seem quirky and finiky but considering that I would be using it when I travel by air on landscapes, urban, etc the quirkiness shouldn't be much of a problem. It would be alot easier to pack than a slr and a couple of lenses.

Just picked up a near mint Nikon F4s last week. Always wanted one since I first saw them back in the early 90's. Normally, I shoot Canon FD gear, but this was way too minty and way too cheap to let pass. So far, results are great and it works with all the lenses I have from my D3.

Congratulations - the F4 cameras are undervalued, I think. They work well with the oldest and newest lenses (with some limitations), are well built, and are the last Nikon to have all the controls externally accessible via knobs and switches. I have two F4s's and have to force myself to resist buying another.

I shoot Canon as well (among others) and think the Canon EF (1973-1978) is the cat's meow.

FM, MD12, long nose Nikkor 50f1.8, Nikon 100f2.8 E, for $80cdn.

There's a bit of a trick to using the MD12 with an early FM.

From camerapedia:

Early production FM's had a knurled rotating collar/switch located concentrically around the shutter release button; this switch functioned as a shutter release lock when the camera was used alone; however,when either a Motor Drive MD-11 or MD-12 was attached,

the knurled switch was supposed to be turned to L after attaching the motor drive but BEFORE turning on the MD-11 or MD-12.

Rotating this concentric switch to the ON position after the motor drive had been mounted and then turned ON would immediately lock up the camera,rendering the camera inoperable, and it was then necessary to remove the MD-11 or MD-11 from the camera base,and to touch the motor drive's exposed contacts with a penny to clear the jam caused by the out-of-synch camera/motor combination.

A coworker yesterday morning told me that a local thrift store we both frequent had just gotten in a few cameras -- and not stupid little point-and-shoots. So I went over there during lunch, and sure enough, they had a little Agfa Silette, two first-generation Polaroids, a mid-1980s cheesy plastic Minolta, and [dramatic pause] a chrome Nikon F Photomic FTn kit.
Long story short, I bought the Nikon kit, and some discounts they were offering knocked it down to a reasonable price. The kit contained the camera, everready case, a Soligor 28mm/2.8 lens, two Kenko teleconverters, some filters, and a hard kit case. Except for the previous owner having scrawled his name and Social Security number on the bottom plate, the camera is in near-mint condition, and the amazing thing is that the Photomic FTn metering head still works! That's almost unheard of.
From the papers that were included with the camera, it seems the original owner evidently bought the camera from a camera shop in Tokyo while he was living (stationed?) in Guam.

Most importantly, the hubby didn't put up much of a fuss about this purchase.

Luckily, unless the owner did it on the inside of the camera, a replacement back solves the social security number issue. If it's on the inner baseplate, I have a clean one for non-motor driven F bodies that I can let go for $20 or so.
