Two different packages of Kala Namak ("Black Salt") seasoning, to see if I can use it to replace my normal sulfide toner.

Zeiss lens in a B&L Volute shutter. I got it cleaned up--did a partial disassembly of the internals and got the aperture blades operating freely and smoothly. This is a weird design: there isn't a separate set of shutter blades. You set the desired aperture, then fire the shutter release and the aperture blades open to that setting and then snap shut. I reasoned that the blades looked a bit fragile for that sort of action, so I disabled the "shutter" mechanism and plan to use the lens cap exposure timing method, because I want to shoot with this lens.

Studio Shutters operate on the same principle.

I got rid of some gear so I could lighten my load and consolidate into more desirable lenses. I still shoot film, primarily my Nikons F5 and F100. With that in mind, I found these two Nikkor zooms to fill the bill. A 70-200G f/2.8 VRII, and a 80-400mmG VR. While these are mostly di***** in use, the fact that they work with the F5 and F100 make them very flexible.

I took some test photos yesterday, but this snow today is going to make full testing with di***** and my F100 wait for some better weather.

I just bought the 100 feet of Ektachrome 64 that was sitting in a freezer that a user here posted up.

I have no self control for these things...Now I need to buy an E-6 kit, slide mounts, learn to mount slides. This never ends.

Thanks, Ansel. It took me a long time to work out that nothing was missing! The blades were hanging up a bit and I was afraid that using the shutter function could damage them. They're smooth enough when I make aperture adjustments but I think that snapping open and closed could do some damage. There are ten blades and the metal is very thin.

A safelight from ars imago. Surprisingly small. Was out of stock in Germany so I purchased it in Italy.

First impression: the control switch (on/off/brightness) - I´m sceptical if we´ll be friends. At least one has to get used to it.

Within the past hour, I nabbed a Kodak Bantam Special with 47 mm f/4.5 Anastigmat. Uses long-obsolete 828 film (which is easily made by recutting 120 or a little less easily by recycling 828 or recut 120 backing with 35mm film).

Bought some more Rollei RPX 400, think I got the last at $6.99 a roll, seem it’s jumped to $7.99 everywhere, at least in the US. Also picked up some Ilford Selenium toner and Kodak Hypo-Clear. All delivered to my door the same day via courier from GlassKey Photo here in San Francisco. How cool is that!!!

I finally found a reasonable price for a 305mm (12") G-Claron in a shutter. I quite like the G-Clarons, and have many of the others (later plasmat versions all) but I've wanted the 305 for a while, but all the longer G-Clarons seem to be pretty scarce (270, 305, and 355) and require patience or a lot of free space on your credit card. The 150, 210, and 240 were much easier to find, and more reasonably priced. The 305 will likely become the standard lens on my 5x7 (I like a little long.)

I managed to get lucky and get my 355 g-claron back when the getting was good. It massively covers just about anything you want to put behind it - I use it as a wide-angle on my 14x17, and a normal/tele on anything smaller.

Yeha, my understanding is that~10 years ago they were dirt cheap because of all the optical process machines being scrapped. I missed that period, but last year I did find a shutterless 355 for a very reasonable price. I bought a Compur 3 shutter from B.S.Kumar, and I still plan to send it to SK Grimes to put an accurate. In the end it will come to around $500, but compared to what I've seen fully shuttered 355's go for, its still a steal.

Just ordered a sheet of 8x10 anti-newton glass for my contact frame. Hopefully it gets here in one piece. I also ordered a couple replacement indicator knobs for the Lektra enlarging timer I was using at Harvey Milk yesterday. One knob was missing and the other one broke while I was using it. Figured a small donation was in order.

Ordered a Kodak 760L instant camera and double pack of (expired 1979) Trimprint HS144-10 high speed (ISO 320) film for it. I have no expectation of the film actually working (but I'll try it anyway), but I wanted the pack shells for building adapters to shoot Instax Square and Mini in the camera -- there are apparently at least a couple reasonably functional ways to do this.

Bad news is, apparently the camera model I bought is prone to the plastic gears failing from age, but the gears are supposed to be accessible, so I can probably 3D print replacements...

A used BTZS darkcloth (8x10) from a seller on the forum here and a couple boxes of HP5+ (8x10). Now to get out on a day off to explore the county around here.

Good luck, @Collin Orthner -- I'd like to try 8x10, but the entry bar is higher than I can manage. I'll have to make do with 4x5 for a while yet (and hopefully won't get too old to carry an 8x10 camera before I can afford one).
