Well, none other than Dead Link Removed, which, as we have just all agreed upon, is subjective :smile: What does "credentials" mean in terms of "art", in anyway?

Not sure if you have read the last 26 pages of this thread.....Some are firm believers that unless you have suitable credentials (I.E., you are a professional), you are not worthy of forming an opinion.

Bollocks to them I say!

to be honest, philosomatographer, i have no idea ..
but i am sure JS MD can enlighten us
because according to what s/he said in this thread
one can't have a valid opinion without the "proper credentials"
the same thing was said in a different thread a few weeks ago

... maybe the respondent in this thread
is the same person ( and a different user name/id ) as was in
the cindy sherman thread ...

I saw a quote tonight from Frank Zappa which seems relevant in this thread;

"Art is making something out of nothing and selling it."
 
The point is - art is whatever you make of it. If you want to make ornaments out of fish hooks and worn out t-shirts and call it art, then who's to stop you? Nobody can disagree, because it's a subjective term.

For me, I stopped thinking about it a long time ago.
I call myself a photographer (not an artist).
I take pictures.
I make silver gelatin and inkjet prints.
Very easily defined and understood.
Why do you have to put a label on it?

I once had an opinion but then went to college to learn I have yet to reach the social hierarchical level to believe or promote them.

You have to consider Zappa's frame of reference. His comments virtually always refer to modern society.

Further, because cave paintings are not moveable it does not preclude the notion that people somehow paid for them.

First, the artist could have been paid to paint them.
How many young, upwardly mobile cave dwellers would have given their last mammoth tusk to have the walls of their abode painted by the famous Oont Groont?

What if the painter, himself, charged people two clam shells admission to enter the cave and marvel at the images therein? People, today, pay a pretty penny to see the caves at Lascaux. (If they are even allowed inside.)

Finally, what if the painted cave was hallowed ground and what if the painter received patronage, political/religious status or both for adorning the walls of the shrine? Michelangelo might not have been so revered and well-known, today, if he didn't paint the Sistine Chapel.

Just because you can't pick it up and carry it away doesn't mean you can't sell it.
 
yup ...
and as far as the cave painter goes
it was just doing the same as a snapshot with a kodak instamatic camera
it was something that took 5 minutes of time for him / her to do
and all of his / her peers laughed ( except for a few ) when admission was charged
to view his / her creation ... he got an advance from the cave painter's art alliance who were
upset with the coloration and the types of images he chose ( " so gauche! " ), and the apparent lack of time
and skill ... they called him / her a "hack" people railed him / her at local cave dwellings
and argued whether the paintings were meant to be called "art" or " a joke" ...
and he laughed all the way to the shell deposit company ...

sounds like art to me ...

That is ok. I use XTOL replenished. Published results disagree with them. We know the XTOL is better. I just don't want to smoke whatever they are smokin'!
