What Makes it art, when it simply could be a snapshot?

Well I have a basic Toyota pickup that has 300,000 miles on it and it never broke down and I think it is a great vehicle. Get a life!

Jeff

I have a life , I dont need to get advise from you.

Re: jovo
World of Modern Fine Art very complicated ... most important genre of Photography is Documentary [because of nature of Photography] . Time & People . Real Life as it is . Conceptual Photography very close to Photo essay . When photographer discover our life through introversion
Re: MarkBarendt
I do have worst than Holga . Cheers

things are only as complicated as you want them to be ...

maybe TO YOU the most important genre of photography is documentary,
not to me ... i can think of many more important genres.

there is more to conceptual-work than things that you suggest.
much of the abstract of photography for advertisements is conceptual ..

Re:jnanian
Camera with lens is a Precise Device capturing reality -whatever you say . Like 2+2= 4 .Open your family album and find your grandparents portrait - what could be more amazing than history ? is it Documentary ?
Genres are Secondary .

But pasting images together via Photo$hop et al so that something that does not exist is the result is not photography, that is imaging. There is a difference.

. . . American Photo Art is very specific. And is Difficult to understand for overseas photographers .
Regards

Then it is not great art. Great art should evoke feeling in almost any society rather than be merely esoteric. One doesn't have to be European to appreciate the music of Bach, Beethoven, or Mahler. There is more art in some graffiti than in some things displayed in some museums, regardless of the strident promotion of some curators. More down to earth, the costumes and tattoos of some bikers must be art to them. You might say it is greater art than American art in general, because it is appreciated by a smaller group.

You miss the point, I was in no way suggesting that a Holga was bad. I was suggesting that you are expressing a very narrow minded view.

Photography has rarely, if ever, been about
Real Life as it is
.

As photographers we pick and choose what we portray, it is never the whole story, we always show bias. We control the content.

i didn't say that, YOU said that.
you never asked me what i thought ...
there is more to photography than a box with a lens, much more ...

Open your family album and find your grandparents portrait - what could be more amazing than history ? is it Documentary ?
Genres are Secondary .

nope, those are snapshots, not art ... that is what the point of this thread is
the difference between art and a snapshot ... and according to what you
wrote ( and did you delete it ? ) you would need additional education
to be able to appreciate those "snapshots" ... because according to you
those snapshots are "conceptual photographs" .... if genres are secondary,
why do you keep putting things in genres / pigeonholes

things don't need photoshop to be conceptual photographs
one of the best conceptual photographers ever was maholy-nagy ...
and some of the others from the bauhaus era. no computers, just an open mind ...

I was specifically going after the Photo$hop crowd that adds "sprite" to photographs and puts together urban myths like the shark jumping out of the water attacking a helicopter during a rescue.

My goodness, how closed minds do ultimately reveal themselves....

If photography is truly art then (notwithstanding our devotion to traditional techniques on this particular site) it cannot be limited to some formula or some narrow path. Do journalism, do conceptual, do p&s, do whatever. It's your thing.

i had a feeling that was what you were getting at ...
but there is more to conceptual photography
than cutting and pasting and creating illusions with photoshop ...
with conceptual images ( whether paintings or photography, music or sculpture )
there is a hidden meaning ... a subtext that gives
the images a deeper meaning, and once one understands the subtle
play on images, shapes, and formal elements of the work it all makes more sense ...
like images that might use old vw beetles with wings
flying like bugs, or skewered in a martini glass like olives or onions ...

and you will see exactly what I am criticizing as not being photography but imaging.

" If photography is truly art then... "
Photography is a way to capture reality , and have nothing to do with art . Captured piece of reality on the film is a flat like a sh** on the road .
When artist use camera as an instrument to express himself - that's a different story

Ha...got it...sort of like the Star Magazine stuff with three headed babies, aliens, Loch Ness monsters, ect..although I think they were doing that before Photoshop was invented. Now it's just easier.

I agree though..It's called Photoshop Art..and it's art to some. Is it photography? Depends on who you talk to I guess but I do know that we can sit here and argue about it for years
