The nikon FM is pretty small and all mechanical. Do you know of anything smaller?

Oh, mechanical. Pentax MX. Sorry.

Olympus Pen F series.

classic style:

-) KMZ Narciss

unorthodox style

-) Siegrist Tessina

Can you beat me on them?

I was go ing to say the Olympus OM1 or OM3 but had forgotten about the PenF,again from Olympus. I have just had a look at the Tessina and with a quick search can find little information about it apart from it did have a seperate viewfinder so is it an SLR?

The other one mentioned may be an SLR but appears to use 16mm film. This is an excerpt from Wikipaedia:=

The Narciss is an all-metal 16 mm subminiature single lens reflex camera made by Russian optic firm Krasnogorsky Mekhanichesky Zavod (KMZ) Narciss (Soviet Union; Нарцисс) between 1961 and 1965. It is the first subminiature SLR. It took 25 14×21 mm frames using unperforated specially spooled 16 mm film in a Narciss cassette. Compact design with interchangeable lenses and interchangeable pentaprism finders. The Narciss camera was initially designed for medical use, it included a Narciss with ordinary pentaprism finder and a second magnifier pentaprism finder for medical use; there was also a microscope adapter[1][2][3]

It has a focal plane cloth shutter, with speeds B, 1⁄30, 1⁄2, 1⁄4, 1⁄8, 1⁄15, 1⁄60, 1⁄125, 1⁄250 and 1⁄500 sec. Change shutter speed only after shutter cocked[4]

Dimension: 100 mm × 64 mm × 32 mm (3.9 in × 2.5 in × 1.3 in) – similar to the Rollei 35s in size)

Weight: 320 g (11 oz) – lighter than the Rollei 35s at 370 g (13 oz)

Tripod socket: 3⁄8 inch

The standard lens is a four-element three-group Tessar type lens: Vega 35 mm/2.8, there are also 5-element 4-group MIR5 28/2.8,MIR6 28/2, and JUPITER 50/2.[5]

An early model of the Narciss is equipped with Industar-60 35 mm/2.8 lens.

Three models were available; the most common was the chrome-top black-body model, rarer was the chrome-top white-body model, and the extremely rare grey-top model.[6][7][8][9]

Accessories: Genuine leather case, microscope adapter, M24 lens mount to M39 lens mount adapter for Zenit SLR lenses, with flange to film plane distance of 45.2 mm. M39 LTM mount with flange to film plane distance 28.8 mm not applicable.

I have to correct myself, the Tessina is not a SLR, but a TLR.

Sorry...

So at the moment the competition seems to be between Narciss and Pen F.

And I assume the Narciss to be smaller. Maybe someone got figures for the Pen F.

The Pentax MX is not only the smallest, but it also has the largest viewfinder magnification among fixed viewfinder SLRs.

Yes, but this thread is about mechanical SLRs.

We pointed out above that there are smaller SLRs.

Time out for speculations Trendland is telling you friends :

Pentax M is a good hint but this is just in concern oft Pentax!!!!!

Remember Pentax?????

Come on you are soo in the near:sad:....hmmm?

Again Pentax.....?

Auto 110 !

with greetings

OP did not specificated 35mm:wink:

In my opinion and for practical reasons the Pen F series is the most serious contender. Without mirror box or penta-prism peak it is just so sleek. In the hands it feels smaller than it measures.
It also uses still common 35mm film. There are downsides of course;
Lenses are expensive and some are very thin on the ground.
Repair is getting less available, it is a very old camera.
It is after all a half frame. Full frame is already a very small format, half frame contains half the information.
But, all that said, I sure enjoy my small Pen kit. I had one it the early 70's, sold it off to get the then new OM-1. About 2002, and in a fit of nostalgia I purchased a couple off of ebay, acquired a few lenses and continue to enjoy them.

yes its all very intetesting! i meant 35mm but still Ilearn do much here.

I believe the OP had full frame 35mm in mind. Besides, the canera size difference is not as much as the film size difference . . . :whistling:

That is why I asked for figures, so that we actually can compare.

Well, and if one needs artificial lighting, the whole size and volume aspect of cameras looses impact in fast pace...

Ricoh KR-5 Super 2 is fully manual and mechanical shutter K mount slr
(meaning that it will control shutter without batteries over its full speed range of 1 sec ~ 2000th)
132 * 85 * 50 mm body 410 gram

Pentax ME
135.5 * 82.5 * 49.5 mm body 495 gram

I have both and have travelled a lot with both.
When I got my first Pentax DSLR, ( ist ds also small for a dslr) I would travel with the dslr, an slr, and one or 2 fixed focal lenses.
Often with just the SMC Pentax-M f/2.8 40mm pancake.

Now I have a Ricoh Pentax K-s1, which is also not much bigger than the MX, and I use it almost always with the XR Rikenon 1:3.5 28mm

:wink::wink::wink: Yes. Twin lens and twin mirror!:wink::wink:
