Trader history for eli griggs (12)

Surely if someone is willing to donate a Leica for $10 to a good cause it would be far more prudent to sell said camera for the few hundred it an fetch and use the proceeds to buy a whole bunch of cheaper cameras and even throw in some film and processing vouchers...?

@eli griggs From what I just read last night on the Soviet Cameras site, Fed was making Leica copies several years before the War, and the Leitz factory wasn't plundered as completely as the Zeiss ones, so it's hard to be sure (especially without the ability to examine the camera hands-on, with magnification available). Lack of an RF eliminates one way to tell if it's a Fed marked as a Leica would be to check the RF coupling mechanism -- from my reading, Fed uses a slightly different mechanism from Leica, such that some recalibration is required to interoperate Fed body with Leitz lenses or vice versa.

If it's actually a Leica that's turned up in Ukraine without provenance, it'd be the bargain of the decade, at least. It's priced not much above an Argus C series. Scale focus, of course, but I've shot hundreds of frames with scale focus and generally good results (a bit hit or miss with wide open close-ups, of course).

It's unlikely that a camera without a rangefinder would have a rangefinder coupling.

Hence why "lack of an RF eliminates one way" -- though it looks like an em-dash got lost in there.

That might make sense to a few, but I do no hold with asking for a thing, in this case a Leica, and then breaking the compact with the Donner by basically stabbing them in the back by selling the item asked for.

If the Donner says, "Here, take this and sell it if you want to buy something else, well, that is another thing all together, but it's no what I am asking for or will do.

In my eyes, that is simply a conartist at work, using deception to get a profit.

IMO.

I think he meant for the donor to sell it, and take that money to do more good by spreading it around to more people than just one.

(and the typo of "Donner" brings a whole new meaning to the party  )

After slogging through 130 plus responses I can’t help but get the overwhelming impression that this boondoggle is simply an attempt to test and validate P. T. Barnum’s (not actually attributed to him) famous line:

“There’s a sucker born every minute.”

I wonder who...?

Yup... as long as Eli’s not paying an arm-and-a-leg for those parts.

There is no way to contractually hold you to this. If someone sells a total online stranger a Leica for $10, there is no way to stop you, or even to know, if you just turned around and sold it for $200-300 profit. If you legit just were interested in producing photographic Art, dozens of the previous suggestions would have you out creating it. If you seriously can not produce images without specifically a Leica brand camera...

If you need a contract to keep your word, well, you are missing out on a lot in your life, like the trust of friends and family, as well as others.

As I have written, several time, this is a piece of gear I know will fit into my life as a daily user, and simply go out to visit, a ride or shopping trip.

I do no make any promises as to the quality or content of my work, and consider 'auditioning' of other "Proofs" to a wider audience, nonsense, as photos made, are a personal choice, and no promises can be made as to the Aesthetic of the viewer or DONER.

IMO.

If that is the way you see others, well, it's a shame, and I hope you will one day have a chance to have someone happily change your POV.

That's the whole point, you aren't a friend or family. You're some random dude on the internet.

You are right, I am just some random dude on the internet, but that does mean I should no trust to others, nor try, and, they are adult enough to decide on whom to take a chance on, for themselves.

"As well as others" includes strangers and the trust that some folks have.

What some call "suckers" are just plain folks who have amore positive outlook at the World and the People and would rather live it, trusting others, even though there is always a chance they might make mistakes in whom they trust, and still continue to see the best in people.

This is how my Mother and Father raised us, and, to my mind, it's a better way to live, than always suspecting the worse in People.

If that or my 'Ask' offends you, you can always find a more pleasing thread to follow

Be Safe, Be well, and Godspeed to you and the others here.

I'll share what I used to tell people when I practiced law.
Whether or not you wanted to pay me to put together something that is binding and enforceable, it is a really good idea to write down what your expectations are, and then share those. Its best if you engage in at least a bit of "what if" thinking when you do that.
That's the best way to avoid the stress that comes from fundamental misunderstandings.
While it is possible to just discuss expectations, writing them down helps ensure clarity.

I was talking about the person donating the camera to you selling it and then using the money to buy you a cheaper camera plus film etc. But re-reading your request it seems that the issue is not that you cannot buy a camera (just last month I got a Praktica with a 55/2 Takumar for $50, it produces excellent photos!) but that you cannot buy a nice camera. I don't know how your mother and father raised you, as you say, but mine taught me that if you want luxuries then you have to go earn them. Photography is a hobby, a luxury and owning a Leica is right up there in the luxury meter.

By the way, there is a fairly straightforward way for "content creators" to go make a bit of money to get started. You can do a kickstarter or you can go to patreon and ask for donations/subscriptions. If there's anything worthwhile you can offer and people like your photos you can make with those not as nice cameras of yours then you'll quickly get a bit of money to buy a Leica or whatever else you like. Just an idea.

What if you... cannibalize... a bunch of parts from various broken Leicas to make a working one?

Might work as long as the Leica doesn't get a taste for other Leica.

That’s hilarious... who among us, you and me included, aren’t just random dudes on the internet? Give the guy a break... either send the dude a Leica or let him live in peace.
