@eli griggs From what I just read last night on the Soviet Cameras site, Fed was making Leica copies several years before the War, and the Leitz factory wasn't plundered as completely as the Zeiss ones, so it's hard to be sure (especially without the ability to examine the camera hands-on, with magnification available). Lack of an RF eliminates one way to tell if it's a Fed marked as a Leica would be to check the RF coupling mechanism -- from my reading, Fed uses a slightly different mechanism from Leica, such that some recalibration is required to interoperate Fed body with Leitz lenses or vice versa.
If it's actually a Leica that's turned up in Ukraine without provenance, it'd be the bargain of the decade, at least. It's priced not much above an Argus C series. Scale focus, of course, but I've shot hundreds of frames with scale focus and generally good results (a bit hit or miss with wide open close-ups, of course).
It's unlikely that a camera without a rangefinder would have a rangefinder coupling.
Surely if someone is willing to donate a Leica for $10 to a good cause it would be far more prudent to sell said camera for the few hundred it an fetch and use the proceeds to buy a whole bunch of cheaper cameras and even throw in some film and processing vouchers...?
That might make sense to a few, but I do no hold with asking for a thing, in this case a Leica, and then breaking the compact with the Donner by basically stabbing them in the back by selling the item asked for.
If the Donner says, "Here, take this and sell it if you want to buy something else, well, that is another thing all together, but it's no what I am asking for or will do.
In my eyes, that is simply a conartist at work, using deception to get a profit.
IMO.
One does not want to be a Donner Party donor...
What if you... cannibalize... a bunch of parts from various broken Leicas to make a working one?Yeah, I'd probably.................wait for it......................."pass".
Jeremy
You mean like adding up a variety of parts... summit? What if you... cannibalize... a bunch of parts from various broken Leicas to make a working one?
Yes, use donor cameras in the Donner fashion. You might need a Truckee load of parts, though. You mean like adding up a variety of parts... summit?
No, he's trying to do it on a hamstring, I mean shoestring budget.Yup... as long as Eli’s not paying an arm-and-a-leg for those parts.

After slogging through 130 plus responses I can’t help but get the overwhelming impression that this boondoggle is simply an attempt to test and validate P. T. Barnum’s (not actually attributed to him) famous line:
“There’s a sucker born every minute.”
I wonder who...?
That's the whole point, you aren't a friend or family. You're some random dude on the internet. If you need a contract to keep your word, well, you are missing out on a lot in your life, like the trust of friends and family, as well as others.

That’s hilarious... who among us, you and me included, aren’t just random dudes on the internet? Give the guy a break... either send the dude a Leica or let him live in peace. That's the whole point, you aren't a friend or family. You're some random dude on the internet.
