It was less expensive at $13 a roll. Even then I thought it was too much! One was still able to buy 5 for $50 though so I didn't complain.
Yes exactly.. I think this might be what they used to call a “ teaching moment” ...

The problem seems to be multi faceted --- you noticed the price jump; you aren't "rich uncle penny bags" (from the Monopoly game ); you shoot fresh film instead of searching for ‘short date’ film from a well known store/reliable source; and most important of all ... you aren’t just thankful that your favorite film is still made and sold. Me? I don't shoot as much color as I used to and I don't shoot KA sheets anymore i mean a 100sheet box of tmy used to cost $64 shipped and now, well its $200.. thanks for making it but nope not gonna drink the koolaid.

To be honest, I’m surprised any color materials are made seeing not many pros are buying 15 pro-packs at a time anymore ( when i was assisting back in the day lots film backs were being loaded with hundreds of rolls of chrome film being paid for by magazines, and corporate clients with $$$ ) and most people who "do analog” are artists, students and hobbyists with limited resources. While some still notice the beauty of a projected chrome or optical set print most of the world isn’t that particular. As mentioned I have shown digi and optical prints side by side made professionally and die-hard film or die people ( who now shoot digital btw ) couldn't tell the difference. YOU might be able to tell the difference / can notice the difference ( because you care ) but most people can't an't don't care .. i mean most people don't even look at anything but screens now why should they care ?
Regard the price of a print... yes they are expensive ( custom prints have always been expensive ) and like expensive film one should be happy that option is still available...
Personally I’m kind of miffed that J Lane isn’t making ortho roll film yet, and that the 14 inch 3inch diameter burritos I used to buy for 6$ are now 14$. they used to feed me for 2 meals ...

Just some observations:

My Uncle shot my parents' wedding on Kodachrome in the mid 1960s. He got that roll from a work mate who had been to the US. It was so expensive that my uncle waited 6 months before a suitable important event happened to use it. He never bought another.

My Physiological cost barrier for film used to be £12 - the cost of HIE and EIR. I can just about buy Provia for that amount now but my wages are more than double what they were when I was buying EIR in the '90s.

I think slides can be seen as cheaper if you compare to the total cost of negatives which includes paper and paper chemistry. I admit that this is only the case, though, if you project your slides and print your negs. Slides are also faster if your time is money as you don't need days in the darkroom or even days in front of a screen fiddling with scanning software.

What is unacceptable for me is the cost of Ektachrome super8 - I was really looking forward to super8 shooting / projecting but the price plus processing is so high. I think I can no longer do movie making, that is sad.

The OP can reduce the operating cost of Fuji film by being more discriminate about when he fires the shutter.

OR because I think Leica prices for used cameras and lenses are high, that they must be money grubbing filthy pinko communist fascist flying pigs! Therefore I will boycott any sellers of used Leica cameras and lenses, be they companies or individuals. I will refuse to buy their Leicas until they give me a bunch of those cameras for free. I will also hold my breathe and refuse to go to the toilet until they meet my demands!

watch out for the troll known as sirius. :D. now, time for good behavior, coming from the guy who helped fuel the fire :whistling:

It is time to move on. George says he either can't afford or doesn't want to pay for slide film. Fair enough. Each of us makes these kind of decisions every day in all facets of our lives. Not sure why he wants to share it, but that's his decision too. Next.

Kodachrome is the only film that is worth paying a premium price for.

Yes, film is expensive. The tipping point doesn't come until you start scanning it. I frankly don't understand why anyone would go to the time, trouble, and expense of shooting film if you are just going to scan it. If you want a digital file, shoot digital. If you like film, make analog prints.
FIlm looks different.

Consider B&W Super-8.

Believe me, I looked. But it wasn't an exhaustive search.
how about contacting freestyle and asking someone there about short date film or hunt photo/video they will probably have some or be able to put you on a contact list.

Provia is hardly my favorite film.
how about if i change what i said to instead of complaining about the price of a boutique alternative process items ( at this point film is pretty much a boutique alternative process )
be thankful that chrome film and color film and black and white film is still being made. plenty of better things to complain about.

I'm just happy there are people still making film. When I am worried about the cost per shot, I shoot digital.

Wait, now I'm confused. Am I supposed to hate Fuji, because a film they still produce is too expensive, or Kodak for discontinuing Kodachrome - a film that can no longer be purchased at any price.

Irony?

Reminds me of the joke:

An old lady goes to the butcher. “I would like please a flank steak,” she says.

The butcher says, “That’s $2.29 a pound.”

“Get out of here with your $2.29,” the old lady says. “Down the block by Oppenheimer’s it’s $1.69 a pound.”

The butcher says, “So go buy it at Oppenheimer's.”

She says, “He hasn’t got any.”

The butcher says, “Lady, when we're out of flank steak, we sell it for only a buck and a half.”
