I'm wondering whether it might not be best to have Ed ship the portfolio to David rather to me. I broke my ankle while out with the camera on Saturday and will be out of the darkroom for quite a while. From what I remember, after David (who I expect will be very quick in turnover) the portfolio makes its way overseas for a bit and I'd be willing to wait until it comes back to the States ...or skip the round entirely.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about your ankle, Michael. Do you have a print from the files you would like to put in? Under the circumstances, it doesn't have to be something new, but if you want to skip this round, that's okay too.

I don't have anything on hand I'm really happy with. On the other hand, it's been a long wait and, thinking about it, I'm curious about the new additions, so maybe Ed could send it to me for a quick look and I then immediately send it on to you. If that's acceptable, that would be great.

Pick a picture you are moderately happy with, and surrender it to the tender mercies of the portfolio participants!

That's what was so absurd, I was within 25 feet of it! Actually, that was a blessing, though driving a shift back home for 40 minutes was no treat.

Stop being so humble...
I just received a handful of excellent Poco prints, all of which would do fine in the portfolio.

The smoke stack or bleach bypass tarp are ones which really hit a cord with me by the by.

Nicole, I think I've got you on the list for the next round.

Before the next round--

I'll go back through my list of current participants and people on the waiting list, and I'll confirm everyone's participation, addresses, and contact info by PM. We don't want the portfolio to go AWOL for three or four months again.

I'll add another portfolio, and we'll split into to groups.

I'm thinking of setting up a fund, maybe a separate PayPal account (and we can make arrangements for those who want to contribute but not through PayPal), for two purposes. As for the first round all contributions would be voluntary.--

--So that new participants who did not chip in for the first portfolio case can chip in for the second one, if they want and are able. The Tenba Port-FedEx case may seem extravagant at around $100, but it's held up so well, and has been a real convenience, so I think we'll stick with it.

--To collect contributions to partially reimburse some of the people who have a particularly heavy shipping burden, because they are always shipping overseas, or who just can't afford it.

If anyone has any further suggestions before Round 3, I'd be interested in hearing them.

Yes, I have the portfolio. I also have a Model getting really antsy, waiting for 8"x 10"s for her portfolio; a semi-efficent darkroom with a jury-rigged piping system (I'm waiting for my son, the Plumber), and weird chemistry problems ...
I'm also trying to decide what to do - now that my most favorite AgfaColor film is no longer available --
Pray for me.

I'm working on my contribution to the Portfolio.... I'll get it out as soon as I can.

BTW - What happened to the nifty combination lock?

The lock disappeared, and I think we've been using cable ties in the meanwhile. If you would like to replace the combination lock (set it to the combo on the secure page), that's fine, but if the Post Office will accept the cable ties, that's okay too. It needs to be locked in some way or another to comply with postal regulations. I don't believe for a minute that locking the portfolio does very much for security.

I'd like to toss out for discussion the packaging inside the case.

I'm of the opinion that once you place a print in the case, you may never see it again thus don't put something in that you may actually want to keep. I know some are unique processes and you do want them back. With this in mind, wrapping prints in plastic, etc is overkill and annoying. Hard to show others too. I'd like to suggest that we all window matt our prints to the size that just fits in the case (11x14?) this would mean they don't rub against the actual print and they are easy to remove, view and replace back in the case. I would have liked to take them to show my B&W group at camera club but didn't as I didn't think I'd ever get them back into their respective packets.

Alternatively, mabe there's some kind of folder that has pages of tissue or some thing where unmounted prints could be interleaved.

Thoughts?

I did the window mat the first trip round. Second time I just stuck it in a plastic clear vue sleeve to save room for other people. We at the start of round two were discussing saving as much room in the case as we could to see how many extra people we could include.

I don't think we should try to get in as many people as possible by sending unmounted prints. With 20 participants per portfolio it's been taking about a year to make the circuit. I think that should be about the limit. We'll add another portfolio to bring in everyone on the waiting list, and add a third for the next round if necessary.

I like the idea of everyone following a uniform mounting standard, since that would make it a neater package, but not everyone has a uniform mounting standard, so it's kind of like herding cats, and one thing that it's interesting to see is how everyone mounts their prints.

In any case, after 20 shipments, possible openings by customs, etc., the mounts and mats will look worn. Last round I wanted to send an 11x14" print, so I sent it unmounted in a sleeve. I think that from now on, I'll go back to my practice from the first round--8x10" or smaller, hinge mounted and matted, so that if the print doesn't look too bad when it gets back, I can remount it easily.

When it gets back to New York, I'll make or purchase a folder for unmounted prints within each portfolio.

I'll stick to unmounted prints for several reasons:

1: I normally don't mount / window mat my prints.

2: Weight: Postage is expensive enough as it is.

3: Most of the damage to the unmounted prints was caused by the prints being suqashed into the space between heavy mounts and the portfolio box itself. I won't protect my print from damage if that increases the risk of damage to someone else's print.
