Functionally the same but likely not physically the same components. The MP is going on 20 years old. It is quite likely that at least some of the electronic components are obsolete and no longer available. It is standard practice in consumer electronics...although most consumer items get refreshed or completely phased out much more frequently than 20 years.

I don't understand the need for a "head fake" to update the MP electronics in the MP and raise the price. They are pretty good at raising prices without a "head fake" or updating anything.

Leica needed to do a refresh of the Leica MP because some of the electronic components are obsolete and no longer available.
So...we get a "new" MP with redesigned electronics cleverly disguised as an early Wetzlar Leica M6.

Not sure they would bother with a "new" label. Leica has a history of making improvements to existing models without making a big deal of it--maybe so buyers wouldn't be reluctant to buy a recently released model.

ah...so you're saying that Leica thought the could make money selling a special edition reissue of the early Leitz Wetlar M6?

The M5 was actually one of the best cameras Leica produced, it just didn't fit the traditional Leica mold and sold so poorly it almost put Leica out of business. Well that and the enormous success of Nikon and Canon SLRs among professionals, especially photojournalists.

The meter times out after maybe 10 secs on the MP. It didn't do that on the M6?
It’s always on with the M5 when you cock the shutter. to turn it off you must either take a shot or put a lens cap on.

I bought a M6ttl, NOS, 0.85 finder about 5 years ago, from a big dealer, might have been MAP Camera, Japan. The seller had something like 10 identical cameras, all new in box.
After a couple years, the meter would stay on if the camera is cocked. It shuts off after the shutter is released, and of course when off. I love the camera. I had another M6ttl, .72 finder for years, it never missed a beat.

I should have it looked at, but I am more afraid somehow it will be damaged. I had one camera repair place tell me that it needs "the programming reset" there is little gold terminals, I suppose that's possible to access the electronics???

I think it may be something in the shutter release sticking. ??

I bet it just needs a simple cleaning in the shutter release area. Most prob there is a little dirt or oxidation that maintains contact therefore not timing out

With the M6?
Just touch the shutter release button and the meter comes on.
After 10~15 sec, the meter turns off automagically.
Need more time? touch the button. No biggie.

I'm sure the M7 and MP are the same.
