Just bought used Leica Q for mid 2K and that feels about as affordable as it gets. Read great things about it so looking forward to a fixed lens camera. The discontinued CL is probably next most affordable although not full frame.

That's a pricey way to get a free roll of HP5!

It's on Thursday, and even though I am local, I'm not going. Don't people have jobs? They couldn't do this on a Saturday fercryinoutloud?

One of the advantages of retirement.

One of the advantages of retirement.

Yes, one of the advantages of retirement is that you can drive down to the Leica Store and pay for parking, which likely costs more than the free roll of film, and then you can shoot it, and then drive down to the Leica Store to drop it off and pay for parking, which likely costs more than the free processing, and then drive down to the Leica Store and pay for parking and pick up your prints and discuss them with a "brand ambassador" which, if you read the job description, is a sales clerk. On the upside, you will get three opportunities to fondle an M11. I've been to a Leica Store on a number of occasions, and once I got to fondle an M10, and based on that experience, if some one gave me one, I would use it. I'll have an opportunity to fondle an M11 this coming January. Alas, the offer of free film and processing will be long over by then. Fortunately, I will be taking the bus, so I'll only be out a couple of dollars, and there are several photo galleries right around the corner from the Leica Store which I like to visit.

Parking is free an Samy's and there is also free parking on the neighboring streets. You just go to the wrong stores.

It's a pretty long walk from Samy's to the SF Leica Store. Rather than park at Samy's and walk to the SF Leica Store to get a free roll of film, I would just buy a roll of film at Samys. The times I've gone, I haven't seen an open parking space anywhere near the SF Leica Store. When I have been there, most of the parking spaces have been roped off and blocked with cones due to construction. I haven't visited SF since 2019, so maybe all the construction has been completed and now there are free parking spaces galore.

The parking at the Leica Store in L.A is free, just a little difficult to get to because of the odd layout of the intersection.

I guess there is a Leica store in the UK, but I've no idea where it is. Definitely not within cycling distance. I live in a place that's so rural you can't do street photography.

😄

A similar reason why I won't be partaking in the free film/processing offer.

I live 60 miles south of San Francisco. Given current Bay Area gas prices and the cost of parking in San Francisco, that 'free' roll of film would probably cost me $100 😋

I am sort of interested in how many people will go down to the Leica Store solely with the intention of getting a free roll of film and end up ordering a limited edition 38th Anniversary M6 or whatever it is Leica will be announcing.

I noticed that the free film offer is limited to 500 rolls per store. I wonder how may people Leica is actually expecting to show up. Granted, I have never been in a Leica Store when they were giving away free film or introducing a new camera, but the most people I have ever seen in a Leica Store is five, and that included me and the staff - me looking at the HCB exhibit, one member of the staff showing a customer a camera out of the display case, and two members of the staff loitering around the cash register area trying not to fall asleep. No wonder Leicas are so expensive; think of the overhead required to generate one sale.

gosh...it's not really about the free film...it's about the experience...the Leica Lifestyle, being present to witness Leica history, hob-nobbing with the Leica community, and so on...no?

If it is not about the free film, why give away free film?

The upside to the hob-nobbing with the Leica crowd is that they'll all bring their Leicas with them, you know just in case they want to take some pictures, so you'll get to see, and if you are lucky handle, a lot of different Leicas, instead of waiting in line to examine the one lonely M11 locked in the display case

The other day, I spotted another guy with a Leica at a crowded event. Do you know, I felt embarrassed. I hoped he wasn't going to come across and claim some kind of kinship, so I sidled away. I also - rather meanly - hoped my photos would be better than his, because it isn't the camera, you know. Having developed my pics, I think he was actually in with a very good chance.

It was the red dot birthmark on his Leica that I noticed first. I used to have mine blacked-out with electrical tape, but later I felt that was an affectation of unproven benefit, and besides it got sticky in hot weather. Now I'm thinking of getting to work with a Sharpie.

I have everything blacked out on my 35mm and digital cameras and I don't even have Leicas. Fewer people come over and ask you how you like your camera because their brother-in-law said they were [pretty good] [sucked]. If someone does accost you, you can just say you are evaluating a prototype camera for Leica and you can't really talk about it. So the guy ends up impressed and you end up amused. It's pretty much a win-win.

If the turnout for the free roll of film is anything like that for this past weekend's Negative Supply Demo Day Event, then I don't think you need to be in any great hurry to get there.

What is Negative Supply Demo Day? I can't make out what's on the screen. It looks like a line from an eye chart. Are they selling diopters or something?

I was just thinking you could carry a hat and a fake moustache with you and score two rolls of film.

What is Negative Supply Demo Day?

In collaboration with Negative Supply, Leica Store San Francisco is excited to host an upcoming event that will present and demo Negative Supply's current and soon-to-be-released film scanning products. Founded in 2017, Negative Supply products have quickly become the new standard for digitizing film using your existing dedicated camera and macro lens, eliminating the need for slower in-home scanning methods. This event is tailored for all analog photographers, as the Negative Supply product line supports various film formats.

but seriously, I don't really give a mouse fart about the film.
I have a fridge full of Kodak, Ilford, Kentmere and Fuji.
I wanna see the new camera!
Remember? the "new (un)affordable Leica M camera"?
The one that's been hyped to the moon and beyond for almost two years???
It's show time!
This is Leica history!

I'm gonna go down into town and get my M6 outta the vault at the bank, mount the Zeiss 50mm Planar ZM and put the Zeiss 28mm Biogon ZM in my pocket....then drive down to Pleasanton, park my car, take BART into the City, sleep on the sidewalk with the homeless people (the religious people distribute free food to the homeless in Civic Center Plaza on Tuesday nights!)...
I might take in an Opera, and visit Glasskey, have clam chowder on the pier at sunrise...and...and...
mmmm, what about morning coffee?

You're going to have to make it a two or three day blowout to fit all that in. The opera is only performing Tuesday and Friday. Also, they are doing Dialogues of the Carmelites. To be honest, unless you are a big fan of Francis Poulenc, you might want to pass. Of course, different people have different tastes in music, and everything else. I can't help you with morning coffee. I can't remember the name of the place I got coffee the last time I was there. And what's with the Zeiss lenses? Did you run out of money? I mean they are not going to let you in the Leica Store with those, and then you won't get your free roll of film.

Perfect, I'll pencil it in for Friday.
I sat through "Girls of the Golden West" and survived the head splitting noise of "Billy Budd"
I'm certain it cannot be that bad.

Keep in mind that Dialogues of the Carmelites is French. That's always a wildcard.

I think I saw Girls of the Golden West at the Houston Grand Opera about 25 years ago, but I may just be remembering a nightmare that I did. I sailed through Billy Budd. Britten is not bad once you get your earplugs in. You need about 20db of attenuation. Of course, that varies depending on where you are sitting.

Oh how I wish I had a million and some time at Samy's. I've purchased quite a few things from Samy's over the years. Someday I will make it in person!

No worries.
Italian is, of course, preferred but, French, German, Spanish...they're all good too.
Carmen is sung in French...and it's one of my favorites.
What was language Rusalka sung in? That was good too.
I admit, Hansel and Gretel (in German?) was a little...meh.
Sung in English is always(?) crap though. Thank g-d there are so few.

Rusalka is sung in Czech and Hansel and Gretel is sung in German. I have only heard them on recordings.
