I've never been to this area, although I do have some odd little postcard books of Berwick from my Grandmother!

She was very partial to this bit of the UK so - it would be kind of cool to find her favourite spots and see what they look like today.

Which reminds me... In Canterbury, Delphine showed us some glorious period images from France etc. I thought they were superb - thanks for showing them Delphine.

One of my greatest treasures is an album (one of twenty six) from my great grandfather's time as a military attache in the Kyber Pass. He developed and printed something weekly, for over twenty years. The album I have has been prepared by him and hand lettered with captions for virtually all images. I think this album was created in 1910. Just about all the images are fairly well preserved. So would you all like to see it?

As for further North - you've probably gathered already that this would be fine by me. But I guess a proper vote should be in order.

No question about it. YES.

I've inherited my dad's negatives which stretch across a life at sea in the twenties, and through the Sudan desert with the RAF in the early part of WWII, and some later. He filed the negs with care, but probably never saw them in print. I'm still scanning, though.

Hello, I do not post very often but if you do decide to come to the North East I might be able to come along (I live a few miles west of Newcastle). I am not much of a Landscape photographer but I do like Hadrian's wall and it can be reached by public transport.

Actually Northumberland, sounds fine to me as it's nowhere near the bottom of the M1 (with those damned roadworks) or dreaded the M25.

Looks like I might have to learn how to take landscapes though

I'd be very interested to see your great grand dad's album....

As for the photographs that I had brought over to Kent, the one which I admire the most is the carbon print of the general.
Since then I read about carbon printing and found a photographer who does carbon print portraits. There is a full explanation of the carbon printing methodology in French. I'd be interested in visiting his gallery in Belgium.

The sooner the dates are fixed the better. I know its early days but some of us need to plan well ahead. At least that's what I've been told by Her who shall be obeyed, we have a significant anniversary around that time!

if we're thinking of dates (as I suspect North East it is, no alternatives on the table) - most suitable for me would be between 4th april and 5th may, but I could stretch to most weekends in the spring.

Heather, Berwick's about 4 hrs from KX on thr train and if you book reasonably far ahead you can go from £14 each way which isn't half bad.

One day you will all have to come to the Isle of Wight. It doesn't get much more 'softy southern' than that until you get down to Cornwall!

I may just be able to attend an Isle of Wight meeting.

Slight problem with Spring is that the Easter weekend falls very early in 2008 (21-24th March) and schools break for end of Spring term on 4th April and return on 21st April. To minimise clashing with coach parties we perhaps could look from Friday 18th April onwards unless we want to take pot-luck with the school hols.

I meant that Cornwall was more southerly than softy!

I'm all for an IoW meet. I like IoW We could go to Dimbola Lodge too!!

Hotel/lodging prices tend to be more of a problem than train tickets... :rolleyes: Which is why I didn't go to the Kent meet a few weeks ago. It was just an ickle bit too far to go there for the day and go back but hotel prices for 2 and everything else isn't as cheap. Would have only been able to meet up on the saturday anyway.

And a little suggestion, could someone keep just one sticky post(or just a plain ol' post) of an itinerary of events for these things? I kept glancing at the previous meet's thread and never quite understood what was going on :confused: One thread for banter and discussion and one thread for Just The Facts

I was AT the previous meet and I never quite understood what was going on either!


It's a good suggestion, but it's a little fiddly to arrange. Back when I was organising the monthly photo challenge a (long) while back, the powers that be gave me limited mod privs in that area so that I could lock, sticky and update a thread. A normal thread would get swamped by posts really quickly.

I think the response in favour of Northumberland has been so overwhelming that we can move on to the specific location and the dates. Les has recommended Berwick as being conveniently central to a number of photogenic locations. Anyone know a good venue in Berwick? Any other bids?

The kind of venue we're looking for (dipping into previous similar threads!) -

• Not too expensive (£40 per night or less seems to have worked for most people in the past)
• Reasonably comfortable
• Enough rooms for most attendees (10+ by preference (more if possible, the way things are going!) en suite favoured)
• Good ale, preferably onsite but definitely within wobbling distance
• Good food onsite in the evenings
• A seating area where we can natter and pass round prints
• Sufficient car parking

A handy way of picking dates is for people to list the weekends that they can and can't attend, or just any preferences if the crystal ball is a bit cloudy! I'll happily (or at least without grumbling too much) run a spreadsheet to collate the votes and the best weekend gets it.

Well Frank, I am more than happy with Northumberland.

Berwick is a lovely town, some nice old buildings, coffee shops and alehouses. But, I did a google tonight and there appears to be a lack of Hotels big enough for us all. The best I could find in town was with 16 rooms, the Castle, which appears to be the only one...see below....

http://www.thecastleberwickupontweed.co.uk/ definately the right price range, and a good bar area. Oh, and the food looks good.

And if its good enough for this man...Dead Link Removed and I wouldn't mind following in the mentioned trail.

I really do think that someone with a local knowledge is best left to advise us.
