Well Frank, I am more than happy with Northumberland.

Berwick is a lovely town, some nice old buildings, coffee shops and alehouses. But, I did a google tonight and there appears to be a lack of Hotels big enough for us all. The best I could find in town was with 16 rooms, the Castle, which appears to be the only one...CUT

Stoo

Thanks for the links Stoo, I agree Berwick is a lovely town. I spent a couple of days there about five years ago and found plenty to do and photograph. I'll post some images when I get my new scanner :D

I stayed in a small B&B just outside Berwick and walked in. I seem to remember, OK I visited some, a number of rural hostelries within a short distance of Berwick which may fit us in? I don't remember to many eating places in the town.

Anyway perhaps Les can advise us?

Date wise:

I have a preference for w/e 19-20 April. I may take a couple of days off as I usually treat myself at that time of the year.
Otherwise, I can do any other w/e in April.
March is rough. May would be difficult to negociate, as I am may be away.

Les said that he would check out local hotels when he returns from Ireland, which should be any day soon. As for timing I would suggest April, provided we can miss Easter and school holidays.
Anyone know when Easter falls next year?

Ahem...
Slight problem with Spring is that the Easter weekend falls very early in 2008 (21-24th March) and schools break for end of Spring term on 4th April and return on 21st April. To minimise clashing with coach parties we perhaps could look from Friday 18th April onwards unless we want to take pot-luck with the school hols.

The Collingwood is a newly refurbished Hotel in Cornhill that has just reopened. It has 15 Bedrooms all with shower and most with a bath but one or two without WC. The price is £110+ per room including breakfast. They also have a small guest only lounge would be ideal for private chats and print viewing etc. They have only 3 single rooms but with two single beds.

I have not yet visited the place as it has just opened although I have been a frequent visitor for meals and have even used it as a base for Photographic Holidays in the past. I return from Brighton next Wednesday and will visit the place then and report back. Don't bother to look it up on the internet as the info there is totally out of date, the new owners have not yet got a site sorted.

that's a bit steep for me if it's per night. If it is for the 2 nights it sounds great. My limit is about 65-70 per night b&b. If everyone else wants to stay there, I'd be happy to find a cheaper alternative nearby.

Perhaps I didn't make it clear that it's a room rate so for two sharing it's not so expensive although I still think it's a bit expensive. Of course I'm a cheapskate

Les, we have to keep in mind that quite a few attending could be singles and will not want to pay such a room rate, or share.

I think it time to ask folks to express their interest and intent to give us a better idea how many to expect. I understand that we cannot ask for a commitment at this distance, but it will provide a guide to the size of establishment that we have to look for.
So with that in mind could those that intend going please post to that effect.
Win and I will be attending.

I will attend and need a single room. I will probably stay for a day or two longer because of the distance.

Count me in. A single room for me. The Castle that I mentioned earlier is £30 for a single room, though I have to admit, I do have to ask myself why it is so cheap?

What ever date suits everyone else. April is good for me.

I'm in and will require a single, but not at £110+ a night!

Les - You're not a cheapskate, that rate is steeper than the flippin' Eiger! 8-o The venue does sound ideal and when I win the lottery jackpot I'll take us all there ('course it might help if I ever bought a ticket!). While we're waiting for that day though, some lower cost options might be worthy of investigation...

Likewise! Maybe somebody with more spare time than I've got at the moment would like to look at http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk where you can not only find hotels etc but read reviews by people who've actually stayed there. I just had a brief look and there seem to be plenty of entries for Berwick.

Dear All,

If invited I will certainly make an attempt to join you for dinner one night
due to the fact Northumberland is the land of my fathers.....

Richard,

I've had a brief look at the site but there is very little displayed in our price range in Berwick itself, perhaps I need to widen the search?

I suggest we also look at...

Dead Link Removed

This site lists accomodation in and around Berwick. Quite a lot to look at.

ps Simon It would be great to meet you again, I'm sure you would be very welcome.
