Shanghai GP3 film in 127 - backing paper is backwards

If the film is not, as OP affirms, taped at the end of the emulsion, I would think there would a strong risk of the untaped film curling down and catching on the edge of the film window -- the open space behind the lens -- when the film first moves toward the take-up spool. No participants in this thread have mentioned that, so bullet dodged, perhaps.

If the 127 is almost "hand-made" as was originally suggested in the Shanghai 220 thread and said only half or less in jest then maybe the nature of the production will ensure that the fault will be or was quickly corrected?

I shot several rolls of Shanghai GP3 127 last year, no scratches and no issues with the film or backing paper at all. So hopefully this is one batch that's got issues. A shame though, just as people were beginning to trust Shanghai again.

These issues should be offset with who else is bringing 127 (and 220) film to market? It does seem that Shanghai works to fix things.

Definitely - Kudos to them for trying to offer something in two nearly "dead" formats in an already niche business.

I just wish they'd get their s**t together and do things right the first time and/or have some better QC protocols. That said I've been a product manager for over 20 years now dealing with Chinese factories so things like this don't surprise me, which is why I wanted to do more of an informational post rather than the usual "stay away from xxx company rant" that is often seen.

There are other 127 options out there to purchase thru B&H. The ReraPan 100 and 400 thru B&H isn't bad at $12.99 per roll, but then things start really going up in price with the Ilford B&W stocks they offer. And then things get crazy expensive for any Kodak color films in 127.

I backed Cinestill's crowdfunding for their 400D in 220 earlier this year, but I am suspecting that I'll never see it based on what little info they've been relaying. I'll more-than-likely end up getting the equivalent in rolls of 120 instead.

So its almost like being willing to take a chance on the Shanghai stuff to support them but knowing its like buying something off Etsy from some small boutique seller.

I like the fact that Shanghai Film co. or whatever they want to call themselves are will to try to accommodate us film nutty people. The one plus thing that Shanghai has going for it is that it already has one buyer/retailer of its films, and that's CatLabs. I was really against the Shanghai and CatLabs deal since I knew it would raise the price of their film. I guess it did have a positive spin-off in the end by giving Shanghai a little wiggle room on spending ventures. Without their support I doubt that Shanghai would have had enough funds to venture into 620, 127 and 220 films. 220 films would have been the least costly since they (Shanghai) wouldn't have had to manufacture or buy new film spools like for 620 and 127. That said, I sure ain't knocking their courage for trying. Keep it up, Shanghai my Kodak Monitor 616 would like some fresh film!

I don't know about the CatLabs 320, but it sure could be Shanghai film. I'm sure the CatLabs 80 is Shanghai GP3.
