Shanghai GP3 100 220 - still an unfinished product?

A scanned inkjet print, presented to me by another fellow RockNRoll Photographer. Going for the wide shot showing all the band members in best light. Lots of FUN and I was delighted to receive this print. OK so this picture explains WHY I go through all this bother to shoot 70mm, but also 220 Shanghai. With a motor Hassy you have a finely tuned instrument made for shooting 70mm. At this Outdoor Rock shoot, 12 exposure rolls go fast and then you have to jack around. In a way it is like shooting digital, in the sense of undisturbed photo firepower. It's definitely been a good way to go for me, and I am preparing to put it to use in the Spring. For some unknown to me reason, Motor Hassys use to be WAY cheaper than crank models. Not so much any more I guess LOL

Does the 220 version of this film have an anti-halation coating?

With no backing paper on 220, if the film was manufactured for 120 without anti-halation on the assumption that the backing paper would provide anti-halation, shooting 220 with no backing paper would be a halation challenge.

I'm into twenty+ rolls through Mamiya TLRs and Hasselblads. I do shoot some 70mm Aerial films, that have minimal anti-halo backing, and I get "blooming" from point source lights, etc. typical of all that. So I'm aware of what it looks like. I don't see any results like that with my 220 so far. Today I dropped a 4x5 Sheet of 1990s Shanghai on the darkoom floor, it was a vibrant purple antihalation. I've not wrecked any of my rolls yet to have anything to look at in the light.

Note the fingerprint halfway down the left edge. Not mine. This was the last frame on what I reckon was a hand-assembled roll.

220 is only worth it if the quality is consistent.

Make a 400, or even a "real 200," with decent QC and I might be interested. Until then it's of pretty limited interest to me but I can see it might be for others.

That's the angle I'm going to use when I sell off the 15 rolls I have left. Lomo-style.
It's a bummer, because the tones of the film are really nice.

Also - I never noticed that my H1 prints exposure info on the rebate! Cool.

Do they not wear gloves while rolling the film? I wear tight fitting vinyl gloves while making mine, and also attempt to only touch the edges as much as possible.

I bet they will after watching their sales drop from threads like this one. The sad part is that I'm pretty sure they were testing the "220" film waters. If the water felt even remotely warm, they would then invest in a mechanical device of some sorts to roll their 220. This thread alone could make or break them when it comes to 220 film. It won't have any direct bearing on my photography, but it might on some folks.

I recall seeing reports of similar defects on the first batch or two of their film -- they even sold some with 120 leader and tails. I've gotten the impression we're past that; I wonder if the roll Huss had problems with was one of the early ones?
