Kodak uses much of the income from analog to fuel their digital work. Analog is their cash cow. If Kodachrome could be made with any profit, do you think that they would stop production? NO WAY!! Kodachrome cannot be made at any level except at a loss.

Kodak gave away the Kodachrome patent for K-14 but no one would manufacture a compatible film as they did for the previous process. There was not much profit in it even then, in the 80s! So, Kodak became the only Kodachrome manufacturer reducing the market from a total of 4 down to 1.

IDK, but I find it rather difficult to believe that Kodachrome always either made little profit or lost money, else why continue making it for so many years? The Kodak factories in US, France and England (and maybe Canada?) all made Kodachrome, and there were a dozen or more Kodak labs in different countries...certainly not a niche product then.

IMHO, the deterioration and poor QC in the processing service was a major problem. I know of many people, myself included, who switched to Fuji and Agfa in frustration and despair, and that must have lost Kodak not only business from Kodachrome, but also E6 sales over many years. But it's history now, I know.

Well, Railway, I am talking about changes over time in relative profits and also the situation about 2 years ago now when it was "retired". This was not an instantaneous change except for the exit from the market by Fuji, Sakura and Dyanchrome.

Saving Kodachrome?

Thanks for starting this thread! I wanted to start off the holiday season with a good belly laugh.

This ranks up there with the rankest of half baked ideas. To see more of them go to the dreaded Kodachrome has been deleted! thread and read about "We can make Kodachrome in my daddy's barn!", "When gramma finishing making her Gin, we can make Kodachrome in her bathtub!", and the classic "Let's make Kodachrome with bathroom tissue instead of that nasty animal based gelatin so them thar vegans will start using film. That will save Kodachrome!"

Better yet, have the monitors merge this thread with the dreaded Kodachrome has been deleted! thread!

Here we go again.

ROTFLMAO!!!

Steve;

You forgot the ones that wanted me chained up in Granddads barn and forced to make Kodachrome for them by hand.

When was the last date this year (?) for Kodachrome processing by Dwaynes? If that date is now past, what are the presumed legions of Kodaholics going to do with their humungous stocks of the little red and yellow boxes? Home brew? Or something more innovative?

Noon on December 30th, the film has to be at Dwayne's. For push processing it has to be there by December 23rd, IIRC.
Prepaid process film has to be sent to Kodak by November 30th. I don't know if prepaid film can be sent directly to Dwayne's or not after that. That is, and not have to pay for processing.

And verily it is said that Kodaholics shall build great altars with their humongous stocks of the little red and yellow boxes and pray to the Great Red and Yellow God of the Greater Rochester region of Neuw Yorke of the Neuw Worlde! And the hoards shall hearken, rant and tear their clothes pouring great quantities of ash upon themselves while they weep over the lost past fickleness and frivolous lack of buying the manna for which they cry, called "Kodachrome"! For surely they shall feel the most cast out among the analogues!

Yea, verily, I say unto thee, thou kisseth my analogue.

Oh dear what have I just waded into.

Is Kodachrome going away YES.

Stop your bitching and get out and shoot it all up. I got two rolls left here and 8 bullets in my Nikkormat. I have some great plans for this stuff from Thanksgiving onward. December 20th is my cut-off date and I'm air-mailing it to Dwayne's. You have a great idea but it will never work.

Now, my project I have been working on for quite some time has been documented with a digital video camcorder, but done very well. I have a tribute to Kodachrome I'm making and I'm not using that damn Paul Simon song either or some sappy shit. Boards of Canada up in this here.

point ----> get out and shoot and revel in the last few rolls, be a part of history! I'm shooting some tomorrow!

Verily, thy words shall return to smite and to haunt thee for all eternity, and thou shalt cry "Woe is me", when (not if) the Great Gods decree that thine own favorite film shall be no longer created.

And thou too mayst then find thyself cast out with many such sufferers from the tribes of Analogue to dwell in the dark lands of Digital forever.

I can envisage in thousands of years archaeologists excavating ancient ruins and finding fragments of documents in a dead language called English that they eventually decipher and assume to be litany s from a long forgotten religion and assuming that the name of the religion,, since it's the most repeated word in the text , is Kodachrome

Would that I be smote with the sharpest edge of the heaviest of the cameras of analogue, so that my suffering be short, than to be caused to suffer by the numbers that cannot be seen; which, by taking only the first two, maketh up all numbers to the measure of 255, and bringing forth 255 thrice, sayeth to make up all colors; but which is untrue, and is of the Deceiver himself.
